DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Learning and Development team is responsible for empowering staff growth and developing their knowledge and skills to drive better performance and positively impact on-field outcomes. Its programming is designed to respond to the true needs of the organization, as established through rigorous learning needs assessment that identifies skills gaps and the learning interventions that fill those gaps.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Boston Red Sox are seeking an Education Lead for the DR Academy for the 2025 season. This is a full-time contract position based on-site at our DR Academy. The Education Lead will work closely with the US Education Coordinator and other departments along with our field staff throughout the DR academy to provide a holistic approach to education and growth for all players.
Utilizing a collaborative approach with various areas of the organization this position will offer off field education and personal development programs for all players at the DR Academy. This will include the creation and directing of continuing education for players (internal and external), development of new off field support systems, and supporting the implementation of our high school program and acculturation to US.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working closely with education coordinators help design and implement education, life skills, language and acculturation curriculum.
- Collaborate to support our Latin American players as they transition from the DR to Fort Myers (FCL).
- Broaden the education curriculum to not only language but also life skills using communications, problem solving and critical thinking skills as foundational skills.
- Practice disciplined system of communication with appropriate staff members related to individual work with players to foster consistency of messages.
- Supervise ESL teachers, tutors and volunteers for the DR Academy, provide feedback for improvement and mentor for improvements.
- Oversee enrollment into virtual high school and for students in program across our system.
- Development and implementation of in-season and off-season programs that complement player development plans and organizational goals.
- Evaluate and monitor the growth of each player using standards-based assessments and aligned curriculum.
- Coordinate with field coordinator for class schedules and programs including an “English Only” day per week with activities during the day and collaboration with coaches and field staff.
- Create professional development opportunities for staff in the DR Academy (English, Microsoft suite)
- Assist in creating more opportunities and resources (books, technology, English programs like Babbel) for motivated learners and independent learning beyond class.
- Be present at the DR Academy 5 days per week to oversee classrooms and activities.
- Additional duties assigned by Education Coordinator.

- Demonstrated command of the language teaching process and the target language (English).
- Ability to create an inclusive classroom environment for students of all learning backgrounds and abilities.
- Ability to manage and maintain a classroom of adult learners in order to ensure that students remain motivated and engage in the curriculum in the intended way.
- Assesses a student’s individual language abilities accurately and provide feedback that promotes growth.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in teaching and/or English required/master’s degree preferred
- Fluency in both English and Spanish
- Experience teaching English as a second language to adolescents and adults
- Knowledge and understanding of implementing virtual high school programs, life skills programs and cultural programs.
- High level of integrity and professionalism
- Prior experience in professional sports or elite athletes preferred
