About the Role
The Huntington is seeking a creative and curious Education and Public Engagement Intern to join our team for the summer. Reporting to the Associate Director of Public, School, and Digital Programs, this internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in programming for diverse audiences and how we evaluate our impact. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues across the division of Education and Public Engagement to support school and youth programs, volunteers, visitor research, and evaluation. Participants will gain insights into ways that public programs are developed, planned, implemented, and the lessons that can be learned through data collection and analysis. The intern will produce a capstone project to present at an Education and Public Engagement division meeting.
This internship is intended to last 12 weeks with an expected start date in late June; however, we can be flexible to accommodate the intern's academic commitment. S/he/they will demonstrate a background in, and enthusiasm for, working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.
Essential Duties
Under the direct supervision of their mentor, the intern will:
Support all aspects of The Huntington’s annual Explorers Camp for children ages 5-13, including in-classroom support, classroom set up and breakdown, and program administration.
Synthesize and summarize data relating to K-12 school programs, transportation reimbursement trends and other public programs.
Support teen volunteer program activities.
Administer evaluation surveys for programs and audience research through the Collaboration for Ongoing Visitor Experiences Studies (COVES) project.
Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions, contributing original ideas and feedback.
Research current trends in museum public engagement.
May perform other related duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements and Experience
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Currently pursuing or recently completed an undergraduate degree in art, history, botany, or any related field OR holds great interest in any related field.
Interest in informal learning in a cultural institution.
Excellent oral communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
Ability to be flexible and responsive to feedback and staff and visitor needs.
Ability to engage with, listen to, and learn from a broad range of audiences and groups, encouraging their meaningful participation in programming.
Preferred:
Experience with designing or guiding experiences for children.
Experience gathering and processing quantitative and/or qualitative data.
