THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a Senior Editor to join our close-knit and mission-driven team at Storyworks 4-6, an award-winning print and digital magazine read by 1 million kids in grades 4-6. The right candidate is high-energy, creative, detail-oriented, and just as excited about writing a gripping narrative nonfiction story as they are brainstorming the plot of a fiction story or crafting quizzes and lesson plans to turn our stories into powerful teaching packages. The Senior Editor will wear many hats, assisting in all aspects of creating Storyworks 4-6 and constantly searching for new ways to inspire our readers and teachers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pitch and research clear, coherent, kid-friendly, and curriculum-connected articles for every issue of the magazine. This includes pitches for all article types: Long nonfiction, fiction, short nonfiction, paired texts, plays, debates, and poems. This should be done with minimal supervision and minimal edits.
  • Write 2-4 articles in every issue. These must be excellent—fun, age appropriate, fascinating to look at and read—and done with minimal supervision and minimal edits. The editor must work on deadline and keep the articles going independently, being aware of the schedule for when text is due to the editor, designer, copyeditors, etc.
  • Work with photo and art team to brainstorm illustrations, pitch ideas for covers, and find images for stories. The editor must have a great visual sense and an understanding of how the look of articles affects kids’ reading—must work with the art directors to usher through visually fun, clean, and clear articles at the correct grade level.
  • Write captivating scripts for knowledge-building videos that are well-calibrated to the interests and abilities of target audience. The editor must work with the video team to review cuts, giving clear feedback.
  • Write and edit lesson plans, skill-building activities, and other digital assets, such as vocabulary slideshows, games, standards alignments, etc. The editor must work with the production and digital teams to traffic all assets to ensure content is published on time.
  • Communicate with scientists, historians, and fact checkers to make sure the facts we present in our magazines are accurate; do research on nonfiction topics that will appear in the magazine.
  • Other responsibilities as needed, including going on class visits and doing presentations on various topics pertinent to our magazine, such as the science of reading, child development, vocabulary, etc.

To apply to the Editor role, please note you must include the following as attachments when you apply.
