Job Description

At the University of Notre Dame, words carry weight. Every story we tell, press release we distribute, and magazine feature we publish helps define our global brand and honor our mission.

As our University Editor, you are the ultimate guardian of our brand’s voice, narrative, and reputation. Embedded within the internal communications unit and reporting directly to the Director of Editorial Strategy, you will act as both a precise strategist and a creative mentor. You won't just catch typos - you’ll elevate stories, maintain standards, and ensure every piece of communication emanating from campus inspires trust and clarity.

What You’ll Do

  • Guard the Notre Dame Brand: Serve as the final sign-off for high-visibility communications, including major research announcements, long-form features, campus-wide news, annual reports, viewbooks, and marketing campaigns.

  • Guide & Mentor: Partner closely with the Director of Editorial Strategy and the NDWorks managing editor to pitch, write, and polish features. Provide ongoing editorial mentorship and constructive feedback to writers and designers across the division.

  • Lead Quality & Strategy: Oversee editorial workflows, maintain and evolve the University Style Guide, and proofread materials generated by our visual communications team.

  • Protect Our Reputation: Meticulously fact-check press releases and institutional stories, proactively flagging sensitive details or potential risks to leadership.

  • Respond in Crucial Moments: Serve as a key member of our crisis communications team, stepping up during breaking news situations - including editing presidential statements.

Who You Are

  • A Eagle-Eyed Wordsmith: You live for grammar, tone, and precision. You notice the tiny inconsistencies others miss and take pride in turning good prose into great storytelling.

  • A Strategic Partner: You understand how individual communications fit into the broader narrative of a premier research institution.

  • An Empathetic Leader: You enjoy coaching writers, managing creative workflows, and helping colleagues elevate their craft.

  • Poised Under Pressure: When breaking news hits or crisis situations arise, you stay calm, sharp, and ready to craft critical messaging at a moment's notice.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a focus in Journalism, English, or Communications preferred.
  • 3 to 4 years of relevant experience is needed for this role.
  • Must be highly detail-oriented with strong editing and writing skills.
  • Be well versed in both the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Having an enthusiasm for and understanding of the mission, history, and ethos of Notre Dame is a must.
  • Must be able to work well under deadline pressure and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
