The Role

Editor, Global News Desk

Reuters is looking for an ambitious Editor for our fast-paced, round-the-clock Global News Desk. Expect to work alongside award-winning journalists in a global news organisation long recognised for its commitment to accuracy and fairness. Play a role helping us evolve digitally to stand out from the crowd for everything from business to world events. The role is to be based in Wellington, New Zealand as we look to strengthen our editing team and support our existing bureau.

We're looking for an editor adept at crafting and honing stories that span geographies, industries, and markets; from scoops and breaking news to analyses and insights. The position demands an understanding of the needs of Reuters' diverse audience, which includes financial and professional clients, the world’s biggest media organisations, digital publishers, and general consumers of news. Responsibilities include handling copy from the Americas region, namely the United States. So interest in the U.S. story is required; experience with U.S. copy is a plus.

This might be the role for you if you're ready to experiment with new story formats and tools, working not only as a copy editor but also packaging our rich content of video, pictures, graphics, audio, and text. Sharp headlines, ledes and nut paragraphs are a must. So is spotting gaps in the file and working with news editors to fill them. A readiness and adeptness to work with generative AI and other technology tools in a manner that is in keeping with Reuters’ Trust Principles is a strong plus.

This role will be based in Wellington, New Zealand.

About the Role

In this opportunity as Editor, Global News Desk, you will:

  • Write and edit breaking news stories from around the globe whilst producing clean, engaging stories at speed.

  • Copyedit longer initiative stories for a global audience that may take a few days.

  • Ensure every story is balanced and includes fair comment alongside engaging visuals.

  • Collaborate with colleagues around the world.

  • Help drive innovation for news production and new ways of telling stories.

About You

You’re a fit for the role of Editor, Global News Desk if you have the following required qualifications:

  • Have demonstrable experience as a reporter or production editor (a track record in business or finance is a plus but by no means necessary).

  • Can write accurately and at speed. We're looking for someone with superb copy-editing skills which will include working with complex stories that may be legally, politically, and socially sensitive.

  • Have strong digital and multimedia expertise and familiarity with the needs of a digital audience; experience optimising stories for search (SEO) and other platforms, as well as an understanding of analytics are a plus.

  • Possess the ability to cover topics for multiple audiences.

  • Have strong news judgment and the ability to shape a story by asking smart questions and challenging premises.

  • Can remain calm under pressure, with the ability to make quick and sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Have good communication skills, a strong team ethic, diplomacy, and a collaborative nature.

  • Experience editing newsletters is a plus.
