SUMMARY:

Reports to the Clinical Manager and, under the general direction and supervision of the professional staff, assists in providing care to Emergency Department patients and their families from arrival through discharge. Performs a variety of clerical and patient care duties as a member of the healthcare team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the Delivery of Safe Patient Care:

  • Collaborates with the Registered Nurse (RN) to establish priorities and organize work.

  • Communicates all pertinent observations to the responsible Registered Nurse.

  • Administers direct patient care and assists with activities of daily living (ADLs).

  • Reports abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse.

  • Performs selected procedures and treatments according to established standards and protocols.

  • Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.

  • Collects specimens; records and reports selected specimen data to the Registered Nurse.

  • Sets up cardiac monitoring devices according to procedure. Assists with cardiac monitoring, performs 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs), and reports findings to the Registered Nurse.

  • Utilizes side rails, restraints, and assistive devices when appropriate and necessary.

  • Documents treatments and procedures for which he/she is responsible.

  • Maintains patient and family confidentiality in accordance with established hospital standards.

  • Serves as an active advocate for patients and families.

  • Supports and reinforces education provided by the Registered Nurse.

  • Performs other duties within the scope of care as assigned.

Responsible for Emergency and Safety Conduct:

  • Demonstrates adherence to universal precautions, safety programs, and infection control measures.

  • Demonstrates the ability to perform responsibilities during emergency and code situations.

  • Reports unsafe situations to the Registered Nurse or Clinical Manager.

  • Maintains an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety.

  • Exercises proper care in the use of equipment and reports repair needs to the appropriate person.

  • Utilizes side rails and restraints in accordance with Newport Hospital nursing policies and procedures.

  • Adheres to constant observation protocols as assigned.

Responsible for Clerical Functions and Efficient Patient Flow:

  • Demonstrates appropriate use of medical terminology and abbreviations.

  • Organizes and prioritizes workload based on patient and unit/clinic needs.

  • Copies charts for admission and disassembles charts for discharge according to hospital guidelines. Files and scans reports accurately, maintains medical records, and faxes chart documents for admitted patients to the appropriate unit.

  • Answers telephones and intercoms using proper etiquette and notifies appropriate staff as needed.

  • Utilizes hospital computer systems accurately to execute orders, retrieve data, and generate reports. Reports computer and equipment malfunctions to the Help Desk.

  • Accurately uses all existing computer systems, including the Hospital Capacity System (HCS), and any new systems required to perform job duties.

  • Arranges for necessary equipment delivery as needed.

  • Follows up on ordered diagnostic tests and documents patient-specific requirements in the computer system, including NPO status.

  • Orders office and clinical supplies as appropriate. Maintains and stocks equipment and supplies.

  • Faxes completed Authorization for Use of Protected Health Information forms to other healthcare providers, receives faxed information, and files it in the patient's medical record. Faxes other forms as needed.

  • Maintains educational requirements by attending educational sessions and accessing the NetLearning website. Meets and maintains competencies through annual mandatory competency assessments and safety education.

  • Reports unsafe situations to the Registered Nurse or Clinical Manager.

  • Adheres to established NPH/unit standards, policies, and procedures, including attendance, punctuality, badging, mandatory education, fire safety, infection control, credentialing, HIPAA requirements, and confidentiality guidelines.

  • Pages physicians and other personnel through the hospital paging system, computer alpha paging, and the hospital emergency operator for code-related communications.

  • Coordinates Continuity of Care form distribution and filing. Faxes forms to Home Care Services when indicated and files copies in the medical record.

  • Obtains copies of medical records as required.

  • Understands and performs appropriate Information Systems (IS) downtime procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Basic Knowledge:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Entry-level credentialing in secretarial and nursing assistant skills.

  • Current Rhode Island Nursing Assistant registration.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout Brown University Health, with consideration of aging processes, developmental stages, and cultural differences in all aspects of care delivery.

Experience:

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to multitask and perform a variety of complex duties.

  • Basic computer skills required.

  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

  • Ability to read, write legibly, and speak English.

  • Basic knowledge of the hospital's patient care delivery and orientation programs.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

  • Exposure to a patient care environment requiring frequent standing, walking, and sitting.

INDEPENDENT ACTION

  • Performs duties independently within departmental policies and practices. Refers complex issues to the supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures is required.

  • None.

Pay Range:

$18.13-$29.90
