This position is accountable for oiling and greasing engines, motors, and machinery   aboard the dredge to ensure their safe and efficient operation. The incumbent will also ensure that engines, machinery and equipment are checked on a regular basis for repair or overhaul.  This position will work closely with the Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer in the performance of these duties.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

  • Works with the Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer to ensure that all engines, motors, machinery, and equipment are well maintained and operational.
  • Inspects engines and other machinery and make use it is operating properly.
  • Oils and greases engines and machinery.
  • Checks machinery and engines for wear, worn parts and proper operation.
  • Assists in making repairs to engines and machinery when required.
  • Reports any unusual conditions or sounds as it related to engine or machinery performance.
  • Uses hand and power tools to repair machinery.
  • Maintains engine room logbooks and records down time.
  • Monitors gages for proper operations and makes appropriate dissections.
  • Corrects safety deficiencies or other unsafe conditions aboard the dredge.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
  • All employees, current and former, must maintain confidentiality by not disclosing to others any confidential, proprietary or trade secret information belonging to the Company.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

 

A minimum of 6 months to 1 year of dredging experience is required with prior related dredge or vessel experience preferred.  Prior knowledge and ability should include the operation or maintenance of marine engines, motors, machinery, equipment, gauges, instruments, etc.  The incumbent must be able to work 2 weeks on and 1 week off and work 12-hour days. 

 

The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the job and have the ability to interface well with other employees on the dredge.  

 

The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace.  Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

 

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. 

 

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.  This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation device, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

 

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel.  Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.

 

In addition, the Oiler must also be capable of:

 

  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Performing repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
  • Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40’-50’.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Working at elevated heights.
  • Lifting alone objects up to 50 lbs. as required.
  • Adapting to extreme temperature changes.
  • Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure.
  • Deciphering visual and audible changes in dredging activity.
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident.

Skills Required

  • 6 months to 1 year of dredging experience
  • Prior related dredge or vessel experience
  • Knowledge and ability to operate and maintain marine engines, motors, machinery, gauges, and instruments
  • Ability to work 2 weeks on and 1 week off and 12-hour days

  • Ability to work in confined spaces and adapt to extreme temperature and outdoor conditions
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs independently
  • Ability to wear and use required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, respirator, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, PFD)
  • Maintain engine room logbooks, monitor gauges, report unusual conditions, and follow safety/environmental regulations
  • Remain calm during emergencies and follow safety representative/management direction
