The Role

This is what you will do:

Alexion Pharmaceuticals, AstraZeneca Rare Disease, is seeking an experienced DMPK scientist and dedicated drug hunter to join the small molecule team located in New Haven, CT. In this position you will play a pivotal role in providing expertise and troubleshooting to the active discovery small molecule projects as well as providing mentorship to fellow scientists within the DMPK group.

You will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with the medicinal chemistry team, you will lead the DMPK efforts aiding in troubleshooting and guidance to the discovery project team with a particular focus on optimizing properties for oral administration
  • Represent the DMPK function in collaborations with wider groups within Alexion and AZ including the discovery and small molecule biology teams
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the Interpretation of DMPK experimental data related to the in vitro and in vivo animal PK, biotransformation, and IVIVC analysis. Present regularly to peers and senior leaders
  • Mentor/train colleagues and/or team on in vitro ADME and in vivo animal PK analysis (Winnolin)
  • Coordinate outsourced in vitro and in vivo DMPK studies as needed
  • Develop new technologies and capabilities in discovery DMPK space
  • Guide junior scientists and manage a dynamic and engaging a team!

You will need to have:

  • Broad knowledge of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics and experience in applying this to successful small molecule drug discovery as a DMPK scientist
  • An expert understanding of DMPK, physic-chemical property assays and biotransformations required to support discovery small molecule projects
  • Strong collaboration and innovative skills across subject areas representing DMPK as a project team representative within the core team is a key requirement
  • Experience in the design, conduct, and interpretation of in vitro and in vivo ADME and animal PK studies
  • The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office/lab environment. As is typical of an office/lab-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: lift/carry 10/20 pounds unassisted/assisted; work comfortably in an environment with and around chemical, biological, and hazardous materials; gown/degown PPE; use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; maintain general availability during standard business hours.

We would prefer for you to have:

  • PhD in Drug Metabolism, Pharmacokinetics, Chemistry, or a related scientific field with 5 years of industry experience post PhD
  • Supported Drug Discovery with specific expertise in small molecule discovery DMPK
  • Experience in leading, mentoring, and training junior scientists!
