The Role
ThoughtSpot is a leading software company building innovative business analytics solutions. The Company is seeking a dynamic Tax Leader to lead our US and global tax function. This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives in a dynamic startup environment and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves to get things done.
As the Director of Tax, you’ll be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our tax operations—from US corporate compliance and ASC 740 provision to international tax strategy. You’ll work cross-functionally with Accounting, Revenue, Finance, Legal, and other functions to ensure tax is compliant and is considered in major business decisions. This role combines strategic leadership with tactical execution, ideal for someone who enjoys both high-level planning and getting into the details.
What You’ll Do:
US Corporate Tax Compliance
Lead preparation and filing of US federal, state, and local tax returns.
Manage relationships with external advisors and resolve tax notices timely with tax authorities.
Tax Provision (ASC 740)
Own the income tax provision processes and work with external advisors and auditors.
Ensure complete and accurate income tax reporting and disclosures in financial statements.
US Sales & Use Tax
Oversee compliance, reconciliation, and applicable audits for sales and use tax and manage potential tax risks for registrations, collections, etc.
Transfer Pricing
Develop and maintain transfer pricing policies, intercompany agreements, and other related documentation.
International Tax Compliance
Support preparation of international corporate tax filings and review/approve.
Advise on global tax planning and structuring.
Indirect Tax (VAT/GST)
Manage global indirect tax obligations, compliance and monitor the potential exposure and required registrations, filings and applicable notices.
Tax Planning & Strategy
Develop and implement proactive tax planning strategies to optimize the company’s global tax position.
Identify tax-saving opportunities and assess the tax impacts on business decisions.
Stay Current with Tax Law Changes
Monitor evolving tax legislation and regulatory developments in the US and internationally.
Communicate relevant changes to internal stakeholders and adjust strategies accordingly.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Accounting, Legal, Finance, and other related teams to assess tax implications of new initiatives or customer inquiries.
Educate internal stakeholders on tax risks and opportunities.
Hands-On Execution
Dive into the details when needed—whether it’s preparing a return, reviewing parts of tax provision, or researching a tax issue.
Build scalable processes while staying nimble and resourceful.
Lead and mentor tax team members.
What You Bring:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA license or Master’s in Taxation a plus.
8–12 years of progressive tax experience, ideally in both public accounting and tech industry roles.
Strong knowledge of US federal and state tax laws, ASC 740, and basic international tax principles.
Strong knowledge of OneSource Income Tax software for U.S. Federal, State, and Local corporate tax returns, extensions, and estimates.
Experience with ERP systems and tax technology tools a plus (e.g. Anrok, NetSuite).
Demonstrated ability to lead team, manage external advisors, and work cross-functionally.
Hands-on, proactive approach with excellent problem solving and communication skills.
Hybrid Work at ThoughtSpot
This office-assigned role is available as a hybrid position, reporting to the office in Mountain View, California, Chicago, Illinois, or [coming soon] New York, New York.
Spotters assigned to an office are encouraged to experience the energy of their local office with an in-office requirement of at least three days per week. This approach balances the benefits of in-person collaboration and peer learning with the flexibility needed by individuals and teams.
In California, the estimated annual salary range for this role is $230,000 – $260,000 per year.
Actual compensation may vary and will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, qualifications, experience, and location of the selected candidate.
