The Role We Want You For

The Director of Tax leads the company's tax function for a large, multi-entity, multi-state construction organization. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local tax requirements while developing tax strategies that minimize risk, optimize the company's effective tax rate and cash tax position, and support business growth.

The Director manages all sales and use tax, indirect tax, property tax, and other construction industry tax matters. The Director will partner with existing tax advisors to oversee federal and state income tax filings and preparation. This position partners closely with Finance, Operations, Legal, Treasury, and external advisors to provide strategic tax guidance, strengthen internal controls, support joint ventures, and ensure compliance across all operating entities.

The Specifics of the Role

  • Develop and execute the company's overall tax strategy.
  • Oversee federal, state, and local tax compliance, including income, franchise, sales and use, and property taxes.
  • Manage tax audits, notices, and relationships with taxing authorities.
  • Provide tax guidance on joint ventures, entity structuring, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the effective tax rate, cash tax position, and available tax credits and incentives.
  • Ensure compliance with multi-state tax regulations, nexus, apportionment, and construction-specific tax requirements.
  • Establish and maintain tax policies, internal controls, and compliance calendars.
  • Partner with Accounting, Treasury, Legal, Operations, IT and external advisors to improve processes and support business initiatives.
  • Monitor tax law changes and communicate business impacts to leadership.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor the tax team while managing external tax advisors.
  • Champion continuous improvement and uphold the company's values, ethics, and safety culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA or CPA preferred; Master's in Taxation a plus.
  • 10+ years of progressive income tax and indirect tax experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Public accounting and/or private-sector experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. federal and multi-state taxation, including income, sales and use, and property taxes.
  • Experience with multi-entity organizations and construction or other project-based industries.
  • Proven leadership, project management, and communication skills with the ability to influence executive leadership and business partners.

  • The salary range for this position considers a wide range of factors in making compensation decisions including but not limited to: Education, qualifications, skills, training, experience, certifications, internal equity, and location. Compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
