Director, Systems Engineering
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Systems Engineering to lead the development of next-generation sequencing platforms. In this pivotal role, you'll guide a team of talented systems engineers responsible for defining, integrating, and optimizing complex systems that span hardware, software, chemistry, fluidics, optics, and bioinformatics. You will be instrumental in turning scientific and product requirements into elegant, robust solutions that push the boundaries of what's possible.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development

Lead, mentor, and grow a team of systems engineers across multiple projects and initiatives.

Establish best practices, processes, and tools for systems engineering activities.

Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Requirements Management

Own the development, validation, and traceability of system-level requirements.

Ensure alignment of requirements with business objectives, customer needs, and engineering capabilities.

Facilitate requirement reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
System Architecture & Integration
-
Own system-level architecture for DNA sequencing instruments and their applications, across multidisciplinary teams.

Lead system architecture discussions and technical decision-making across teams.

Define and manage system and interface definitions, ensuring alignment across the organization, and external partners.

Drive interface negotiations and documentation between subsystems.

Identify and manage system-level risks and issues.
Stakeholder Collaboration

Collaborate with product management, R&D, operations & support teams to ensure system requirements are accurately implemented and tested.

Represent the systems engineering function in cross-functional planning and governance forums.
Required Qualifications
-
Graduate-level education in a relevant technical field such as Systems Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or related fields.

Experience in systems engineering with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.

Proven ability to lead architecture and integration for multidisciplinary systems—ideally with exposure to sequencing or diagnostics instruments.

Deep understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements development, system architecture, integration, and verification & validation.

Strong communicator and collaborator who thrives in fast-paced, cross-functional environments.

Familiarity with Agile development methodologies is desirable.
Preferred Experience

Represent the systems engineering function in cross-functional planning and governance forums.
Non-Field Based Employees are required to be onsite Monday-Thursday (Friday work from home). Depending on the role, some employees may be required to be 100% onsite.
You may be required from time to time to visit and work at PacBio locations and for such times as the Company considers necessary for the proper performance of your duties.

Salary Range:
$195,900.00 - $293,900.00
