Director, Software Engineering
Overview
This position supports the Authorization Decisioning product within Mastercard's Decision Management program. Decision Management enables faster, smarter decisioning at global scale by structuring and applying complex business logic across the payment journey and beyond. Authorization Decisioning orchestrates high throughput, low latency, and data-intensive processing across Decision Management's intelligent system on behalf of a suite of market-facing products.
This position is responsible for working on behalf of those market-facing products to directly and indirectly lead teams of program managers, product managers, and software engineers to deliver enhancements across the Decision Management platform. More so than most technical management roles, this position requires a patient empathy to relate to and understand the needs of our partners and an organizational savvy to find creative and co-beneficial ways forward when the ability to execute requires coordination beyond your direct team.
Role/Responsibilities:• Drive adoption of engineering best practices, standards, and opinionated frameworks across teams.• Lead delivery of complex, multi-team initiatives across real-time decisioning, rules, AI inference, data pipelines, and supporting platform services.• Ensure systems meet strict availability, latency, scalability, security, and compliance requirements expected of global transaction platforms.• Own operational health including SLAs, incident management• Lead and develop multiple engineering managers and senior technical leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous learning. • Set clear objectives, performance expectations, and growth plans aligned to Mastercard leadership and engineering frameworks.• Acts as a multiplier, scaling impact through leaders and systems rather than direct control. • Balances short term delivery with long term platform sustainability and modernization. • Models strong engineering judgment, operational rigor, and customer centric thinking. • Embodies Mastercard leadership behaviors and a culture of inclusion, ownership, and excellence.
All About You • Proficient with different application patterns to implement different types of business processes (e.g., APIs, event-driven-services, batch-services, web-applications, big data). • Hands-on experience with data-intensive programming in Java, REST API, Microservices, Kafka, Axon, MQ, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Jenkins, and Spring. • Proven experience delivering high scale, low latency, highly available platforms in regulated or mission critical environments.• Seasoned in leading teams to deliver large and complex releases on-time and budget.• Well-versed in SDLC practices (Scrum/Kanban/SAFe) and the nuances/applicability of their use in a variety of delivery situations.• An expert in using basic engineering principles for building and running mission critical software capabilities (security, customer experience, testing, operability, simplification, service-oriented architecture).
Education • Required undergraduate degree in Computer Science or in a STEM-intensive degree program with related experience in software engineering.• Preferred graduate degree in Computer Science or Business with related experience in fintech and payments.
