The Director, Software Engineering codes software applications based on business requirements. The Director, Software Engineering requires an in-depth understanding of how organization capabilities interrelate across the function or segment.

JOB SUMMARY

The Director, Software Engineering devises an effective strategy for executing and delivering on IT business initiatives. The person in this position acts as a liaison and collaborates with the business and functional stakeholders to identify and deliver strategic enablement solutions. The Director, Software Engineering requires an in-depth understanding of how organization capabilities interrelate across the function or segment.

Our Department of Defense Contract requires U.S. citizenship for this position.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director, Software Engineering leads solution strategy and execution for customer service areas of Humana Military. Oversees the engineering teams who develop and deploy solutions. The responsibilities include engineering, solution development and delivery, testing and production management. Decisions are typically related to the implementation of new/updated programs or large-scale projects for the function and supporting technical/operational procedures and processes, and implements strategic plans, drives goals and objectives, and improves performance. Provides input into functions strategy.

Strategy, Planning, Analysis and Design

  • Provide leadership and direction for multiple engineering teams responsible for planning, analysis and design of software solutions aligned to one or more value streams
  • Take a leading role in collaboration on the development of strategy, roadmaps, and appropriate technology choices staying up to date on industry trends, tools, and technologies keeping innovation at the forefront
  • Devise technical solutions aligned to our business strategy providing direction and support to the engineering and operational teams that must deliver and support these solutions
  • Understand, analyze and map current business processes
  • Partner with operational leaders to modify current business processes to improve their efficiency and accuracy
  • Partner with business owners and operational subject matter experts to define new business processes to meet strategic, operational or government requirements

Development, Integration, Testing and Implementation

  • Provide leadership and direction for multiple engineering teams responsible for software integration, development, testing, deployment and maintenance supporting one or more value streams
  • Be a champion for and a servant leader to multiple scrum teams with a focus on the delivery of business value, risk mitigation, cost optimization, and return on investment
  • Be a leading partner with architecture, database and other software engineering leaders to ensure teams produce appropriate solutions to business challenges that meet both functional and non-functional requirements
  • Provide team leaders and teams with appropriate guidance related to development, testing and change control guidelines and ensure they follow it

Team Building and Leadership

  • Energize, mentor, and guide team leaders and their teams to envision the possibilities in modern and innovative technologies.
  • Understand and apply enterprise-wide thinking to departmental and team goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Provide guidance to team leaders and work with them and their teams to develop and execute action plans designed to achieve and maintain a high level of associate engagement
  • Work with HR and IT leadership to recruit talent to fill open positions
  • Provide effective team leadership by ensuring each team leader and team member understands their role and expected contributions by ensuring regular 1 x 1 meetings and team meetings are held
  • Provide frequent feedback to direct reports and conduct performance appraisals as directed by company policy

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, technical area preferred or on the job and or technical training equivalent.
  • 8+ years of progressive leadership experience within a technology area in a large segment /business
  • 3+ years of large-scale technology solution delivery experience
  • 15+ years technology experience
  • Five or more years of management experience
  • Experience leading in agile delivery model
  • Broad understanding of Information Technology solutions including technologies, platforms, applications and capabilities
  • Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on continuously improving consumer experiences
  • Deep expertise and demonstrated experience in enterprise scale enterprise data platforms, reporting and analytics solutions
  • Experience with cloud services and platform
  • Experience in managing change by leading and energizing others through periods of transformation, ambiguity, and complexity
  • Experience leading technology services in a highly regulated business
  • Proven ability to operate effectively and independently with minimal guidance in a highly fluid and ambiguous environment
  • Excellent communication, story-telling and influencing skills
  • Experience with collaborating at executive leadership level
  • Experience with Visio, Microsoft Office or similar tools
  • Established ability to successfully work with cross-functional team and work well with other architects/leaders/teams
  • Healthcare related experience
  • Proven ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-changing environment; be nimble and adaptable, handle ambiguity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree desired
  • SAFe Agile Certification
  • Experience managing infrastructure services for a federal contract
  • Experience with TRICARE or other federal contracts and technology integrations
  • Experience with technology compliance to federal contract requirements

Work-At-Home Requirements

  • WAH requirements: Must have the ability to provide a high-speed DSL or cable modem for a home office. Associates or contractors who live and work from home in the state of California will be provided payment for their internet expense.
  • A minimum standard speed for optimal performance of 25x10 (25mpbs download x 10mpbs upload) is required.  
  • Satellite and Wireless Internet service is NOT allowed for this role.
  • A dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


 

$172,200 - $236,900 per year


 

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
