Position Summary

The Director of Shelter Operations is responsible for the day-to-day performance, consistency, and accountability of shelter operations across multiple shelters. This role ensures that all shelter environments are safe, respectful, and well-maintained. It also ensures that operations staff consistently uphold standards that support both dignity and structure for individuals seeking shelter. The Director plays a critical leadership role in stabilizing operations, strengthening staff performance, and reducing incidents through clear expectations and consistent follow-through. This position requires a visible, hands-on leader who can balance compassion with accountability, and who is comfortable making decisions while collaborating with senior leadership on matters that impact culture and program direction.


Some of the duties include:

  • Oversee daily shelter operations, including food services, front desk, security, laundry, maintenance, transportation, and scheduling
  • Support the Family Overflow Supervisor with scheduling, staffing, training, and overall management of the family overflow shelter
  • Foster a respectful and supportive shelter environment by actively participating in resident engagement initiatives, including Shelter Solutions Committee meetings
  • Lead, supervise, and support a diverse team of staff in accordance with established organizational policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Grievance Coordinator to address and resolve grievances, including reviewing bans and determining eligibility for return
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels through effective workforce planning, recruitment, scheduling, and accurate timekeeping practices
  • Ensure Operations staff remain compliant with all required training in collaboration with the Facility Director and Human Resources
  • Assist with budget development and oversee Operations-related expenditures, including supply purchasing and processing check requests
  • Ensure Operations staff are properly trained in and effectively utilize the shelter data management system.
  • Serve as the shelter's representative in engagements with stakeholders, encompassing local businesses, partners, and volunteer groups, both during onsite walkthroughs and events, as well as within the broader community 
  • Understand and support Housing First Philosophy
  • Embrace the philosophy of maintaining a low-demand, high-expectations program 

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant experience along with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working with people experiencing homelessness, veterans, people with substance use disorders, people with re-entry backgrounds, and/or other relevant social service populations. The candidate must demonstrate strong communication skills and attention to detail. A minimum of two years of experience in shelter operations, safety, and security is preferred.
