Job Summary:
We are hiring a Director of AI Portfolio Operations to own the health of Neumo's AI portfolio and run the governance layer that keeps it honest. This is an operator's role: you will direct the program managers who run each program in the portfolio, dotted-line to you from the PMO, take the governance model the VP of AI has designed and make it real — sharpen it, stand it up, and operate it at scale — and set the day-to-day cadence of the AI organization.
You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Data, Security, Legal, and Compliance, and you will be the person leadership turns to for a straight answer on where the portfolio actually stands.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Portfolio health. Own the single view of every AI program — scope, schedule, spend, dependencies, and risk. Keep the portfolio roadmap accurate enough that funding and staffing decisions can be made from it without a side conversation.
- Intake and portfolio shaping. Own the front door. Every candidate program comes in through one process with a business case, a sponsor, a sizing, and a named owner, and leaves that process funded, deferred with a stated reason, or declined. Say no often enough that the yes list is deliverable and keep the record of what was turned down and why so the same idea is not relitigated every quarter.
- The governance layer. Take the AI governance model as designed, improve it, stand it up, and operate it at scale: stage gates, model risk review, bias testing, human-in-the-loop design checks, and the audit evidence that has to exist before a capability ships.
- Oversee the program managers. Direct the program managers running each program in the portfolio, who dotted line to you from the PMO. Set the standard for planning, status, escalation, and delivery, hold that bar consistently across programs, and give the PMO the input that makes their performance and development decisions accurate.
- Operating cadence. Run the rhythm of the AI organization — planning cycles, program reviews, staff meetings, quarterly business reviews, and executive reporting — and own the follow-through that turns a decision into a dated commitment with a name against it.
- Delivery execution. Drive programs through the hard parts. Unblock dependencies across product, engineering, and data; escalate early; and make the tradeoff between scope, date, and quality an explicit decision rather than a late discovery.
- Compliance in practice. Partner with Security, Legal, and Compliance so that FedRAMP, StateRAMP, CJIS, SOC 2, and emerging state and federal AI regulation are satisfied by the way programs run — not by a scramble ahead of an audit.
- Measurement and reporting. Define the metrics that show whether the portfolio is working — delivery predictability, cycle time, adoption, cost, and outcome against the original business case — and report them in a form both a board member and an engineer will trust.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
- Must be eligible to obtain a U.S. public trust or security clearance.
- 10+ years in technology program or portfolio management, engineering delivery leadership, or a comparable operating role, including 3+ years directing program or delivery managers — whether or not they reported to you on a solid line.
- Proven ownership of a multi-program portfolio delivered in production at enterprise scale — running the operating system other people's programs depend on, not managing a single project.
- Governance you have built and run. Intake, stage gates, risk review, and audit evidence: designed or inherited, then made to work day after day across teams that do not report to you.
- Working technical fluency in modern AI. You do not have to build models, but you do have to read an evaluation, challenge an estimate, and tell a real blocker from a comfortable one. LLMs and agentic systems, retrieval, and classical ML.
- Multi-tenant SaaS delivery experience (AWS or Azure), with real exposure to security, reliability, and what it costs to run software at scale.
- Experience in an estate assembled by acquisition. You have run programs across a platform portfolio that was bought rather than built — mismatched architectures, legacy systems still carrying real volume, duplicate capabilities across product lines, and integration debt that constrains what any roadmap can honestly promise.
- Credibility in both directions. You can hold an engineering team to a date without losing them, and give an executive a status that is accurate the first time they hear it.
- Regulated-environment judgment. Experience in government, public sector, fintech, healthcare, or another domain where accuracy, privacy, and auditability are non-negotiable.

- Private-equity-backed growth environment
- Portfolio or program management certification (PMP, PgMP, SAFe)
- Experience standing up a PMO or governance function from an early state
- GovTech or public sector experience
- Familiarity with FedRAMP/StateRAMP/CJIS authorization.
Work Environment:
- Office setting with a moderate noise level.
- The employee will work at an individual workstation, using a telephone and computer.
Physical Demands:
