Overview

AmTrust Financial Services, a fast-growing commercial insurance company, is currently seeking a Director, Claims for our Non-Profit segment. The successful candidate will manage and mentor a team of claims professionals handling high-exposure and complex Non-Profit claims. Prior claims experience with social services providers is strongly preferred. We will also consider candidates with significant commercial general liability claims experience, as premises liability accounts for a substantial portion of our claim portfolio. The Director, Claims will provide technical leadership and strategic direction in coverage analysis, liability assessment, damages evaluation, settlement strategy, and litigation management while fostering the professional growth and technical expertise of their direct reports. These claims arise in various jurisdictions throughout the country and, as such, experience in multiple states is required. This position can be located in one of our claims offices, with the possibility of working remotely.

Responsibilities
  • Owns the development and performance of a Non-Profit focused claims team, ensuring the quality, accuracy, and timely resolution of commercial liability claims of high complexity and/or severity.
  • Assigns new claims to team members based on complexity and skill set of staff.
  • Oversees the handling of all aspects of the claims assigned to the team including investigation, communication, documentation, reserving, litigation management, evaluation, negotiation and settlement.
  • Provides technical guidance on complex coverage, liability, litigation, and damage assessment issues.
  • Ensures that all customers receive quality service and advocates claims customer service excellence by building an understanding of the customer experience that meets and exceeds stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Completes regular manager reviews of claims to ensure work meets or exceeds standards and that claims handling is consistent with applicable policies, procedures and department guidelines.
  • Regularly participates in claims roundtable discussions focusing on claims issues surrounding coverage, liability and assessment of damages.
  • Manages personnel administration including employee evaluations and performance.
  • Creates an environment that ensures transparency, accountability, training, and development.
  • Prepares regular periodic reports and monitors system reports to ensure adherence to corporate and regulatory standards.
  • Reviews and analyzes processes, procedures and workflows to identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging legal, regulatory, and industry developments affecting non-profit and general liability claims.
  • Other tasks as assigned by AVP/VP.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in leadership roles within the insurance industry.
  • 7-10 years of relevant and progressively more responsible claims work experience across multiple casualty lines.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; Juris Doctor (J.D.) preferred
  • Multi-jurisdictional expertise.
  • Valid claims adjuster’s license in appropriate jurisdictions or ability to obtain such.
  • Thorough understanding of tort and contract laws, principles of coverage, and liability insurance in general.
  • Strong contractual analysis skills to include the analysis of insurance contracts for coverage determinations and other contracts for risk transfer obligations/opportunities.
  • Skillful negotiator.
  • Ability to manage a diverse group of claims professionals located in multiple offices.
  • Ability to mentor, train, and be a leader within the organization.
  • Ability to plan, organize, delegate, and develop direct reports.
  • Ability to synthesize and draw conclusions from large amounts of data; translates the data into actions and results.

Skills Required

  • At least 5 years of leadership experience within the insurance industry
  • 7–10 years of progressively responsible claims experience across multiple casualty lines
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Experience handling claims across multiple jurisdictions and states
  • Valid claims adjuster’s license in applicable jurisdictions, or ability to obtain one
  • Thorough understanding of tort law, contract law, coverage principles, and liability insurance
  • Strong contractual analysis skills, including insurance coverage and risk-transfer obligations
