Job Overview 

The Director of Narrative and Strategic Communications leads N2N’s narrative strategy, digital presence, social media, and public communications across our 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities. This role ensures that our storytelling, messaging, and public voice uplift the needs of our members, strengthen our coalition building, organizing, and fundraising efforts, and advance our long-term vision for transparent, consistent, accountable systems of government here in Massachusetts.

Working closely with the Organizing, Development, and Leadership Teams, this role will develop and execute communications strategies that build power, deepen supporter engagement, and elevate the voices of our communities. The Director of Narrative and Strategic Communications will oversee press relations, digital strategy & fundraising,  narrative development, and cross-team communications alignment for staff and members. Additionally, this role will provide strategic leadership, rapid response to MA political news, manage staff or consultants, and represent N2N publicly. This role will report to the Deputy Director. 

Hours: This is a full-time position that may require travel, weeknight, and weekend hours.

Location: This role will require in-person attendance and support for events and programming across Massachusetts. 

Key Responsibilities Narrative Strategy & Messaging (35%)
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive narrative strategy that advances N2N’s mission and aligns with movement partners.
  • Craft and maintain clear, compelling messaging for both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) arms of the organization.
  • Lead rapid-response communications during key political moments, crises, or opportunities.
  • Partner with the Leadership team to shape N2N’s advocacy and strategy on key political issues, pending legislation, and ballot initiatives by
    • Tracking policy in collaboration with the Policy Director during legislative sessions and 
    • Train staff and members on message discipline and narrative framing relating to legislative and political goals, targets, and political strategy
    • Drafting and delivering internal presentations, memos, and strategy briefs summarizing political updates and advocacy priorities
    • Oversees and manages the creation of the organization's annual report
Digital Strategy & Content (30%)
  • Oversee N2N’s digital presence, including email, social media, website content, and digital campaigns.
  • Build and implement a savvy, grassroots digital fundraising program incorporating
    • Thoughtful creation and placement of compelling digital ads,
    • Timely and strategic email and text fundraising asks,
    • Detailed management of digital donor CRM (EveryAction),
    • Intuitive workflows that cross-tag donors eager to support Organizing Team goals and objectives
  • Develop digital strategies that support base-building, fundraising, and public education through
    • Collaboration with Development staff to support donor communications, appeals, and impact storytelling.
    • Partnership with Organizing staff to uplift member stories and campaign priorities.
    • Tracking digital analytics and adjusting methodologies to maximize reach and engagement.
    • Creation of multimedia content (graphics, videos, toolkits, etc.) unless otherwise delegated.
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusivity across all digital platforms (e.g. WCAG 2.2 standards or better)
Press & Public Relations (20%)
  • Build and maintain authentic relationships with reporters, editors, media outlets, partners from allied movement organizations, and elected officials across the movement ecosystem.
  • Draft and approve press releases, statements, advisories, op-eds, and talking points.
  • Prepare staff and members for media interviews and public speaking.
  • Represent N2N at press events, public forums, and coalition communications tables 
Cross-Team Collaboration & Organizational Leadership (15%)
  • Ensure consistent messaging across all departments and platforms.
  • Manage communications staff, consultants, or interns
  • Provide regular updates to the Leadership Team on communications performance and strategy.
  • Conduct ongoing internal audits of the organization’s public-facing messages and materials. Including but not limited to: 
    • Reviewing public-facing materials produced by N2N departments and chapters
    • Working to strengthen the message and to develop the public narrative skills of staff and member leaders
Qualifications

Required Qualifications 
  • 5–7+ years of communications experience within movement organizations, community organizing, or political campaigns, including experience
    • Managing staff, consultants, or cross-team communications workflows.
    • Collaborating with cross-functional teams.
    • Leading social media strategy and platform/digital tool management.
    • Strategic planning experience across multiple campaigns or organizational cycles.
    • Managing press relations and serving as a spokesperson.
    • Working with individuals of varied racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual orientation, gender expression, socioeconomic background, and individuals with disabilities. 
    • Differentiating and stewarding timely, relevant, and authentic c3 vs. c4 messaging.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing organization-wide communications strategies featuring content that supports organizing, advocacy, or community-based work.
  • Excellent ‘people skills’ to work cooperatively and patiently with other staff members and member leaders
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence skills, active listening ability, problem-solving skills, and a proven track record in interpersonal engagement, support, and development of others
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into accessible messages.
  • Ability to represent N2N publicly in high-stakes or political environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the Massachusetts political and media landscapes.
  • Graphic design, video editing, or multimedia production skills.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills.

Salary & Benefits 

This full-time position offers a salary range of $100,000 to $105,000 per year.
