Founded in 1870 by a woman, Bathsheba A. Benedict, Benedict College is a private co-educational liberal arts institution with over 1,700 students enrolled in its 26 baccalaureate degree programs and 2 master's degree programs. Defying trends, Benedict College maintains a nearly equal male and female student population. This Midlands HBCU has welcomed students from all 46 counties in South Carolina, 30 states across America, and 26 countries around the world.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the dean, serves as the principal administrator, instructional leader, advisor, and recruiter for the graduate program. This is a hybrid, full-time, 12-month, tenure track position that requires campus-based and virtual presence on a weekly basis. The program director will be expected to teach up to 6 SCH per semester and will be released 50% time for coordination and supervision of full- and part-time faculty; assignment of teaching and advising loads; leadership for curriculum and program development; assessment of student learning outcomes; innovation of co-curricular enhancements; and coordination of experiential learning, recruitment and retention activities, and internship/practicum and first-destination placements. The Director will also be expected to serve on committees at department, school, and college levels; engage in scholarly research appropriate for rank; and participate in public service initiatives.
MASTER’S IN SPORT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
The MSM Graduate Program at Benedict College is designed to meet the needs of individuals who are interested in starting or furthering their existing career path or who would like to enhance their career opportunities. Candidates for the degree will be expected to complete a minimum of 36 semester credit hours. Twelve (12) of the 36 hours will constitute the MSM Core. The MSM Core is required of all candidates, along with 18 credit hours in the concentration in Sport Administration.
PROGRAM MAJORS OFFERED
The Sport Administration concentration is designed to prepare candidates to work in a global sporting environment. Graduates of this program are expected to be able to think critically, communicate effectively, and employ leadership qualities to solve complex issues in a diverse world. Additionally, they are expected to possess technical skills, analytical skills, business savvy, and have a broad understanding of the core business functions. Candidates in the Sport Administration program will be exposed to courses in management, law, marketing, financing and sales, and identify the influence of diversity and equity in sport management.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Coordinates short-and long-range planning in accordance with the Strategic Plan
- Provides leadership for program area(s) including but not limited to student admissions, retention, recruitment, and placement
- Provides academic, career and personal counseling to applicants and students; monitors student progress to ensure a successful experience
- Manages student and faculty issues, complaints, and concerns
- Coordinates and publicizes all programmatic activities, including orientation, internships, placement activities, etc.
- Develops the master course schedule for the program area each academic term
- Oversees program assessment plan
- Monitors academic course teaching/instruction and student records
- Manages program budget and resources
- Participates in program, school, and college committees
- Supports program, school and college initiatives after hours and/or on weekends, if required
- Maintains an active, scholarly agenda of research in discipline
- Supervises, evaluates, and hires full- and part-time faculty
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated commitment to teach, educate, and lead in diverse environments with historically marginalized individuals and groups
- Proficiency with development and implementation of courses using virtual platforms
- Ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning
- Demonstrated capacity to facilitate student learning and engagement
- Demonstrated commitment to professional responsibilities, student development, and service
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned PhD in Sport Management, or sport-related field
- Familiarity with Sport Management curriculum and programs
- Familiarity with COSMA and accreditation standards
- Familiarity with QM (online) instructional standards
- Evidence of 2 to 5 years of teaching experience
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarly activity, and leadership
- Evidence of Familiarity with academic advising to include supervising undergraduate (i.e., internships, research projects) and graduate (i.e., theses) experiences
- Ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning ability to demonstrate collegiality and a sound work ethic
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) or more years teaching experience in higher education
- Evidence of administrative leadership
- Evidence of scholarly publications and teaching effectiveness
- Evidence of proficiency with learning management systems and online teaching and learning
Skills Required
- Earned PhD in Sport Management or sport-related field
- Familiarity with Sport Management curriculum and programs
- Familiarity with COSMA accreditation standards
- Familiarity with QM (Quality Matters) online instructional standards
- Evidence of 2 to 5 years of teaching experience
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarly activity, and leadership
- Evidence of familiarity with academic advising, including supervising undergraduate internships/research and graduate theses
- Proficiency with development and implementation of courses using virtual platforms and effective use of technology in teaching and learning
