The Director of Marketplaces at Pattern is responsible for leading and optimizing our ecommerce marketplace operations outside of Amazon. This role involves developing strategic initiatives, managing cross-functional teams, and driving growth across various platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ecommerce and a proven ability to execute successful marketplace strategies.

What is a day in the life of a Director of Ecommerce?

  • Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance performance and growth across multiple ecommerce marketplaces.
  • Lead and manage a team of marketplace specialists, ensuring alignment with business objectives and fostering a culture of excellence.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including marketing, sales, and operations, to drive marketplace success and optimize performance.
  • Analyze market trends and competitive landscapes to identify opportunities for expansion and differentiation.
  • Oversee the development and execution of promotional and advertising strategies to increase visibility and sales on marketplace platforms.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess marketplace performance and implement data-driven improvements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with marketplace partners to ensure seamless operations and strategic alignment.

What will I need to thrive in this role?

  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in ecommerce or marketplace management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • 10+ years of experience in ecommerce, marketplace, or digital retail leadership with a proven track record of driving multi-channel growth and profitability.
  • Deep understanding of online marketplaces — including Amazon, Walmart, Target, eBay, and emerging platforms.
  • Demonstrated success managing large-scale marketplace operations, including advertising, fulfillment (FBA/FBM), and product content optimization.
  • Past strong leadership and team management skills, with experience managing cross-functional teams and developing high-performing talent
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams and external brand partners
  • Analytical mindset with proficiency in data analysis and interpretation to drive strategic decision-making and optimization of ecommerce initiatives
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a strong sense of accountability and a proactive approach to problem-solving
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Ecommerce, or a related field.

What does success look like in the first 30, 60, 90 days?

  • 30 Days - You have your team schedule and structure established with regular 1:1s, you build strong relationships with team members, brand managers, and 1P brand partners.
  • 60 Days - You hold regular strategy sessions to share valuable suggestions with 1P brand partners.
  • 90 Days - You build and execute successful strategies and understand the nuances of your 1P brands’ ecommerce needs.

What is the team like?

  • The Marketplace team will report to you and you will report to the VP of Marketplace. You will have two Associate Directors with teams reporting to them. This team is data-driven and results-oriented. You will collaborate regularly with members of your team and work across departments to implement actionable solutions.
