About the role
Public Policy at Cloudflare
Cloudflare is one of the most dynamic and innovative companies providing services on the Internet. As regulation of the Internet across a number of technologies and jurisdictions is exploding, Cloudflare is seeking to be a leader and trusted voice for understanding the implications of these new technologies around the globe. We're looking for a new team member who can help foster our unique corporate philosophy and approach, in which the security and privacy of our customers are paramount.
This is a fast-moving work environment with goals that are closely linked to business priorities, however, policy issues are typically within the areas of cybersecurity, AI, data protection/privacy and intermediary liability.
What you'll do
Cloudflare's Public Policy team helps the company by anticipating regulatory challenges, acting as an external advocate for Cloudflare on priority policy issues, advising our internal teams on public policy challenges and opportunities, and identifying opportunities to build relationships with external partners. For our Director, Head of US Public Policy, we're looking for someone who can foster our unique corporate philosophy, develop public policy solutions to challenging technology issues and be comfortable giving front line support on issues requiring engagement.
The Director, Head of US Public Policy will be primarily focused on addressing US policy issues. Because of the scope, complexity, and diversity of the company's work, our Public Policy team members must be flexible, talented and able to work collaboratively across multi-functional teams to find and present policy solutions, to carry the Cloudflare narrative, and promote the public policy brand externally.
Responsibilities
  • Lead Cloudflare's government-facing advocacy in the United States.

  • Develop US policy strategy that is aligned with Cloudflare's international public policy efforts and global business priorities.
  • Participate in and shape Cloudflare's engagement with trade associations, including building and crafting positioning and key initiatives.
  • Develop talking points, policy narratives and presentation materials for use at external events and meetings and for other communication purposes (company blog, position papers etc.).
  • Articulate Cloudflare's positioning to relevant policy makers and officials.
  • Work to build and maintain relationships with key US policy makers, and to find engagement opportunities with business, civil society entities, and other third party organisations.
  • Provide timely updates to colleagues from the Cloudflare Public Policy, Legal, Trust & Safety Teams and other internal stakeholders.
Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
  • BA with strong academic credentials required, JD or applicable graduate degree desirable
  • 12+ years of experience working closely with US federal regulators and officials, as well trade associations and industry groups. Experience within a tech or telecoms company is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of US laws, regulations and policy developments important to Cloudflare as well as associated rule making and legislative processes.
  • Experience drafting or substantively reviewing proposed legislative text, regulatory comments, and formal policy submissions.
  • Strong network of US regulators, officials, peers, and industry stakeholders
  • Fluency in and proven passion for cutting edge technology.
  • Strong communications (written and oral) and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to articulate complex policy issues to executive audiences.
  • Curiosity and willingness to experiment with new technologies, ways of working, and policy approaches.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Team player, and a sense of humor
  • Detail oriented, well organized and a sense of initiative
  • The ability to manage many issues and engage with multiple teams within Cloudflare
