About the Global Media Team:
Elsevier's global media team plays a strategic role in protecting and enhancing the company's reputation among key external stakeholders. The team proactively plans and executes earned media strategies aligned with Elsevier's objectives, helping to position the company and its portfolio of solutions with the scientific and medical communities, policymakers, and industry press.
Through their efforts, the global media team helps to enhance the company brand and supports commercial objectives while reinforcing Elsevier's position as a trusted leader in information and analytics.
About the role:
Director, Global Media Relations (reporting to Terri Mueller, VP, Global Communications)
Responsibilities:
- The director will help lead the media strategy and support global media activities connected to Elsevier’s priorities, such as commercial launches, campaigns, thought leadership initiatives, executive communications and reactive media inquiries.
- The director will collaborate with the segment teams on messaging, bylined articles, pitches and other content for use with media.
- The director will work with multiple stakeholders in key markets, including agencies and business partners, to deliver on the media goals and will provide counsel to the business segments and markets.
- The director will provide support on key global media activities such as handling media inquiries as needed, strategic planning, tracking and measurement.
- Expected to maintain an in-depth understanding of technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
- This role is fully remote and will be based in New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania, USA. There will be occasions where the director will be required to travel to an Elsevier office or to attend off-site meetings (10% travel).
What we're looking for:·
- 7+ years of experience in media relations or corporate communications ideally within a global, matrixed organization or agency setting supporting a large enterprise client.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
- Established relationships with, and credibility among, journalists covering science, healthcare, technology, or business.
- Demonstrated experience counseling senior executives on media strategy, positioning, and issue/crisis response.
- Strong news judgment and writing skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific and technical topics for a general audience.
- Experience managing external PR agencies and cross-functional stakeholders without formal authority.
