Description

The Director of Finance leads the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the organization. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Director ensures the accuracy of financial data, maintains internal controls, and assists in aligning operational goals with long-term financial strategies.     

Requirements

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Activities include but are not limited to the following:

Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Compile, analyze, and present accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. 
  • Prepare detailed budget-to-actual variance reports to track the financial health of various programs.
  • Assist the CFO in preparing financial data for the CEO, the Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Track and report on restricted grants and government contracts to ensure compliance with funder requirements.
  • Ensure absolute adherence to CFR cost principles and administrative requirements.  

Payroll & Accounting Processing

  • Process bi-weekly multi-state payroll accurately and on time, including deductions and tax withholdings in conjunction with Human Resources.
  • Verify that payroll and labor hours are allocated and documented in strict compliance with CFR personnel activity reporting requirements. 
  • Supervise the processing of accounts payable (A/P) and accounts receivable (A/R), ensuring invoices and reimbursements are coded to the correct grants and departments.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor junior finance and accounting staff.
  • Serve as the go-to resource for department heads regarding their specific operational budgets and allowable expenses under federal law.  
  • Assist the CFO in forecasting cash flow needs and calculating/negotiating indirect cost rates. 

Audit & Compliance

  • Prepare schedules, lead the reconciliation process, and act as the primary liaison during annual financial and single audits.
  • Ensure internal controls are strictly followed to protect organizational assets and prevent fraud.
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations, including maintaining proper 990 documentation and CFR Compliance Requirements.

  • Establish a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilates new employees to the Agency’s culture, values and mission.  
  • Participate in activities as part of the team that may include meetings, trainings, and committees.

  • Thorough knowledge of financial and legal best practices and requirements with a proven ability to provide sound and ethical financial counsel to executive leadership.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or related field required.
  • 3-5 years of progressive financial management experience. 
  • A strong background in nonprofit management is preferred.
  • Must be proficient in nonprofit accounting software (Sage Intacct Experience preferred) and advance Excel skills a must. 
  • Experience with CFR preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / HAZARDS

  • Bloodborne Pathogen Category III – Job related tasks DO NOT involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue and tasks are not a condition of employment.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to quickly address any emergent issues without losing focus on task at hand.
  • The employee must have full sight and hearing with fluency in the English language. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit. Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine, scanner, computer printer, etc.

Salary Range: $70,400 - $80,900

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
