The Director of Environmental Affairs leads the strategic and operational management of environmental programs across Eversource’s three-state territory (CT, MA, NH). This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, oversees remediation projects, and directs emergency environmental response efforts.

HYBRID WORK POLICY

Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature of work and team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject to change,  based on managerial discretion and work performance. All applicants must be able to work up to five days in the office if needed (for example: emergencies, training, or other business needs) or should the policy change. 

Essential Functions: 

Manages a group of approximately 35 environmental professionals responsible for all areas of corporate environmental work made up of three groups including Environmental Compliance, Environmental Remediation, and Environmental Field Response (EFR - including emergency response).

Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure company-wide compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Oversee permitting processes, audits, and reporting requirements, including air reporting (methane, SF6).
  • Monitor regulatory changes and advise leadership on implications and strategies.
  • Manage TSCA/PCB issues across the electrical and gas operation companies.
  • Works with other areas of the Company to ensure regulatory compliance in all environmental areas, including at Company facilities.

Environmental Site Remediation

  • Lead investigation and remediation of contaminated sites, including legacy and active facilities, building demolition/decontamination, including Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) sites, pipe-type cable (PTC) releases, and other oil-filled electrical equipment releases.
  • Manage consultants, contractors, and budgets for site investigation and remediation projects.
  • Coordinate with legal and regulatory agencies to ensure proper closure and documentation.
  • Responsible for supporting environmental real estate due diligence strategies working with internal real estate team and legal (both in-house and outside counsel).

Environmental Field Response (EFR)

  • Develop and maintain environmental emergency response and on-call rotations.
  • Directs spill response field work (working through EFR team managers and supervisors), including ensuring emergency response environmental preparedness during significant storm events.
  • Lead response efforts for environmental incidents (e.g., spills, releases, storms).
  • Coordinate asbestos compliance across all operations.

Strategic Leadership

  • Advise senior leadership on environmental risks and opportunities.
  • Develop and implement environmental policies and procedures while supporting Company’s broader sustainability initiatives.
  • Represent the company in regulatory, community, and industry forums.
  • Responsible for decision making regarding budget, program implementation, negotiation strategies and, in certain areas, regulatory interpretation and interfacing with regulatory officials.
  • Communicates internally and externally on Company initiatives and compliance priorities.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill: 

  • Requires broad-based knowledge of utility industry and corporate business.
  • Good organizational management.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.

Education:       

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental or other science, Engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience. 
  • Advanced degree preferred.       

Experience:                 

  • Twelve (12) years’ experience in all aspects of environmental requirements related to the corporate business including eight (8) years of management experience.             

Licenses & Certifications:  

  • Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Licensed Site Professional (LSP), Licensed Environmental Professional (LEP) or Professional Geologist certifications are preferred but not mandatory

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing walking and climbing stairs.  Also include field visits which may include construction sites, rough terrain or production facilities where operating machinery is present. 
  • Potential exposure to oil or hazardous materials. 
  • Job can require frequent travel to other operating districts and Companies within and outside of the states of CT, MA and NH.

  • Work includes calculating, comparing, technical writing, editing, evaluating, interpreting, organizing, consulting, analyzing, planning, designing, documenting, specifying, coordinating, implementing and presenting. 
  • This role works in an environment that often requires the performance of multiple simultaneous activities, where deadlines need to be met and work is performed under pressure while involving significant business commitments and results.

Compensation and Benefits:

$187,200.00-$208,000.00
