Director of Engineering & Design (PE)
Position Overview 5K Power is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering & Design (PE) to serve as the senior engineering authority leading the development of its temporary power, electrical distribution, power generation, and prefabricated electrical products.
Lifecycle Ownership: Responsible for guiding products from concept through engineering, design, fabrication, testing, field deployment, and continuous improvement.
Ideal Background: A Professional Engineer (PE) with strong electrical engineering expertise and practical experience in electrical construction, manufacturing, prefabrication, power distribution, equipment integration, and relevant codes/standards.
Hands-on Leadership: Collaborates across operations, manufacturing, estimating, procurement, sales, and executive teams to ensure products are engineered correctly, cost-effective, efficiently manufactured, and deployment-ready.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Professional Responsibility
Serve as the senior technical authority, establishing design standards, processes, and review procedures across all projects.
Review, approve, and seal engineering designs, calculations, drawings, and technical documentation.
Ensure strict compliance with NEC, NFPA, OSHA, UL, IEEE, local AHJ, and customer specifications.
Provide primary technical support to manufacturing, operations, sales, and customers.
Product Development & Electrical Engineering
Lead the engineering of temporary power skids, switchgear, transformer skids, spider boxes, mobile/EV charging, and data center solutions.
Oversee full product lifecycles: Concept → Engineering → Design → Prototype → Testing → Manufacturing → Field Deployment → Standardization.
Perform system designs and calculations, including load, short-circuit, voltage-drop, transformer sizing, and overcurrent protection coordination.
Develop one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel schedules, and equipment specifications.
Manufacturing Integration & Standardization
Design for manufacturability (DFM) to optimize production, reduce labor and material waste, and speed up fabrication.
Develop repeatable fabrication methods, standardized components, assembly documentation, and BOMs.
Create and maintain the 5K Power Engineering Standards Manual to build a repeatable product platform rather than engineering every project from scratch.
VDC / BIM Technology Integration
Lead coordination with VDC/BIM teams to convert engineering designs into accurate fabrication models and shop drawings.
Establish modeling standards and develop a standardized digital product library to improve constructability and field installation.
Quality, Reliability & Cost Optimization
Establish QC procedures, participate in product testing/commissioning, and conduct root-cause analysis on field failures.
Support commercial efforts by identifying cost reductions, evaluating alternate components, and assisting with custom-product feasibility and pricing.
Team Leadership
Hire, mentor, and develop engineering staff.
Establish design schedules, team KPIs, scalable processes, and career development paths.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Engineering schedule performance, design accuracy, and cycle times
Engineering-related rework, warranty issues, and field failure rates
Manufacturing efficiency, labor hours, and material cost reductions
Product quality, standardization, and successful product launches
Regulatory compliance and customer satisfaction
Qualifications
Required:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience: 10+ years of engineering experience with a focus on electrical power distribution.
Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of the NEC, low-to-medium voltage systems, transformers, switchgear, and engineering documentation.
Leadership: Proven ability to lead engineering teams and collaborate cross-functionally.
Preferred:
Experience with temporary power systems, electrical prefabrication, data center infrastructure, and UL-listed equipment/NRTL certification.
Proficiency in BIM/VDC, AutoCAD, Revit, or Navisworks.
Background in Lean Manufacturing or Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
Ideal Candidate A hands-on builder, designer, and technical leader who understands the complete product journey from design and procurement through fabrication, testing, and field energization. Comfortable engaging directly with shop fabricators to refine designs and continuously improve products.
