The Opportunity

9fin’s Engineering team has grown rapidly to more than 50 engineers across multiple cross-functional product squads, and we are continuing to expand. We are seeking a Director of Engineering to set the technical vision and lead multiple high-impact teams responsible for our Core Product area, the foundation that delivers 9fin to our customers.

This role requires a deeply technical leader who thrives in high ownership environments. You will lead by example, establishing a culture of engineering excellence where teams tackle complex challenges, innovate boldly, and grow their skills.

We are looking for an experienced leader with a proven track record of scaling both systems and teams. You will define architecture, drive strategy across Core Product, and empower Engineering Leads to deliver at scale while staying close enough to the details to mentor and inspire your teams.

As Director, your role is to amplify the impact of your teams, making strategic decisions that shape the long-term direction of the Core Product area. You will ensure reliability, enable rapid innovation, and create the conditions for lasting technical and cultural impact. What you’ll work on

Every day is different, but here’s a dose of the kind of things you’ll be doing:

  • Provide strategic & technical leadership over multiple engineering teams in the Core Product area, ensuring alignment with company objectives and technical direction.

  • Develop and scale high-performing, cross-functional engineering teams capable of delivering resilient, maintainable, and scalable systems.

  • Set the long-term technical vision, driving architectural decisions that enable future growth and system evolution.

  • Partner with senior product, design, and business leaders to align technical investments with customer value and company strategy.

  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence through mentorship, standard-setting, and championing robust engineering practices across teams.

  • Empower and develop Engineering Leads and senior ICs, helping them grow their leadership capabilities and extend their technical reach.

  • Own and be accountable for hiring the best engineering talent on the market, partnering with the VP Engineering, People and Talent Partners to build world class teams.

  • Lead large-scale initiatives and programs that span teams and domains, ensuring delivery, performance, and long-term sustainability.

  • Oversee technical operations and incident response practices across teams, ensuring high system reliability and actionable learning from incidents.

  • Identify and prioritise systemic improvements to engineering velocity, platform reliability, and developer experience.


About You

This role will be a great fit if you:

  • Are a seasoned engineering leader who believes that all engineering leaders should be deeply technical. You will have a technical background in software development and a proven ability to lead multiple teams and managers in complex, high-growth environments.

  • Demonstrated success in defining, owning and executing technical strategy, scaling systems, and aligning engineering investments with long-term business goals.

  • Strong organisational design skills, with experience structuring and evolving high-performing, cross-functional engineering org.

  • Strategic thinker with a keen product and platform sense, capable of balancing user experience, technical architecture, and operational resilience.

  • Excellent communicator and executive collaborator, skilled at influencing across engineering, product, design, and executive leadership.

  • Committed to cultivating a culture of excellence, inclusion, and continuous improvement across technical and people domains.

  • Known for developing senior engineering talent, building succession plans, and empowering leaders to scale their impact.

  • Track record of driving operational maturity, reliability, and sustainable technical innovation across a growing organisation.
