We are hiring a Director of Employee Communications to reset and lead this function at a higher strategic and operational level. As we set out to become a $10B company in the age of AI, we must drive a high-performance culture grounded in clear strategy and operating at pace. To do this, we must raise the bar on how our internal comms operates and delivers the information employees need in order to execute successfully, while strengthening leadership alignment, employee trust and clarity during periods of change. This requires a Director-level leader who can set the strategy and operating model for the function, influence senior stakeholders, lead through others and drive into execution when needed with core partners, including executive leadership, the People team and Global Comms. It is important to base this role in the U.S. (San Francisco, NYC, or Austin) so the Director is in the time zones where leadership is primarily making decisions that directly impact employees and the internal communications function day-to-day in addition to supporting high-velocity, high-stakes communications with senior leaders in real-time. Early objectives include:
- Reset the Program: The Director will define and implement our internal comms plan, operating cadence, channel strategy and quality bar to be consistent and proactive while delivering operational excellence at pace
- Lead cross-functional alignment with Global Comms and HR: They will closely collaborate with the People Team and will ensure internal communications are planned, aligned, and integrated into the company narrative, major business moments and leadership priorities
- Lead High-Stakes Moments: Own our most visible internal platforms, like Global MongoDB Lives. We need a leader on the ground to ensure these moments deliver. This role will oversee the execution of several of leaderships’ tentpole programs that shape company strategy, trust and organizational clarity
MongoDB is building the data platform for the next generation of production-grade AI applications. We’re looking for a Director of Employee Communications to lead our internal communications strategy and execution. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Global Communications, you will own the internal communications function to keep our global employees aligned with our company strategy and engaged in our customer-obsessed mission, with a focus on clarity, trust and execution across the business.
We need a strategic operator who thrives on the ‘how’ and is energized by the challenge of giving our employees the clarity they need to succeed. You will set the direction for and run the day-to-day work of the internal communications function, with a focus on connecting our teams to our brand story, strategy and business outcomes while ensuring operational excellence across channels, company moments and leadership communications: you should be as comfortable refining a sensitive announcement as you are producing a high-quality Town Hall or using feedback and channel analytics to inform our communication strategy.
What You’ll Do- Drive Clarity and Delivery: Own the strategy, prioritization and end-to-end execution of internal programs, from global events to daily updates. Your goal is to ensure the right information reaches the right people at the right time so the company can move fast
- Shape Internal Messaging: Take complex technical or business updates and turn them into clear, authentic internal messaging that works for everyone, from engineers to recruiters
- Lead High-Impact Moments: Lead our Company Town Halls and other critical company-wide communication moments. We want these to be high-quality, interactive productions that employees want to watch
- Drive Cross-Functional alignment: Work closely with the People Team, Corporate Comms, and Marketing to run a unified internal communications program. You’ll ensure our messaging is consistent with our company narrative and aligned to leadership priorities and major business moments
- Own channel and communication effectiveness : Manage our internal comms channels (Slack, intranet, video, etc.) and use analytics to decide how we best reach and inform our people
- Lead the Team: Manage and mentor a team of communicators. You’ll set a high bar for precision and "roll-up-your-sleeves" execution while building team capability, strong editorial standards and scalable ways of working
- You have 10+ years of experience in internal and/or corporate communications, mostly in tech (Saas), and a proven ability to own communications strategy, advise senior stakeholders, and find effective ways to inform and align employees at scale. You are scrappy and independent. You’d rather build a new playbook than follow an old one, and you know when to stop a project that isn't working to try a better way
- You are a master of your craft. You write with precision, and you’re a great editor for others with strong judgment in high-stakes and sensitive situations
- You know how to create internal communications moments that leave employees feeling informed, clear on priorities, and connected to the company strategy
- You are digitally savvy. You know your way around modern comms tools including AI and you’re comfortable using data to make decisions
- You have great judgment and know how to communicate clearly through ambiguity, change and fast-moving situations. You know what’s worth an email, what’s worth a meeting, and what’s better left unsaid
- You are a proven People Leader. You have a track record of managing and inspiring high-performing communications teams. You know how to delegate effectively, provide editorial feedback, and build a cohesive team culture in a fast-paced, distributed environment
- Ability to travel [25%]
