Verra Mobility is a global road safety technology business partnering with governments and enforcement agencies across multiple international markets.

Our technology operates where the digital and physical worlds meet. Hardware, software, cameras, sensors, communications, data and analytics work together in real-world environments to support road safety programs used every day.

We are creating a new Director, Edge Engineering role in Melbourne to lead the engineering capability behind these systems. You will lead hardware and software engineering and set the technical direction for our international Edge solutions. This is a broad engineering leadership role spanning strategy, architecture, sustaining engineering, product lifecycle, New Product Introduction and engineering performance.

This is a full-time, permanent & hybrid role, working from our South Melbourne office when on-site.

What you’ll lead

  • Lead multidisciplinary hardware and software engineering capability across our international operations.
  • Set technical direction and influence architecture decisions for Edge products and platforms.
  • Develop engineering roadmaps that balance sustaining engineering, product improvement and new product development.
  • Improve the reliability, performance, security and scalability of technology deployed in real-world environments.
  • Strengthen engineering processes, standards and delivery disciplines to improve quality and predictability.
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and ensure strong product design, validation and engineering methodology.
  • Build engineering capability through workforce planning, leadership, coaching and effective resource allocation.
  • Partner with Product, Operations and business leaders to translate customer and commercial needs into sustainable technical solutions.
  • Manage key engineering vendors and technology partners.

Our environment spans Edge computing, hardware and software systems, distributed architectures, networking, systems engineering, computer vision, digital imaging, sensors, signal processing, real-time data acquisition, video analytics, IoT and AI/ML. The broader technology landscape also intersects with cloud technologies, DevOps and CI/CD.

You do not need to be the deepest specialist in every area, but you will need the technical breadth and judgement to lead experienced engineers across them.

What we’re looking for

  • Significant engineering leadership experience across both hardware and software engineering.
  • Strong technical judgement across architecture, systems design and product performance.
  • Experience leading complex technology products through development, introduction, operation and ongoing improvement.
  • Strong knowledge of modern engineering practices, systems engineering and product lifecycle management.
  • Experience with distributed, connected, embedded or Edge technology environments.
  • Proven ability to build capable engineering teams and develop technical leaders.
  • Strong stakeholder management across technical, operational and commercial teams.
  • Experience managing technical vendors and external engineering partners.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a related discipline is required.

Experience in road safety technology, intelligent transport systems, computer vision, embedded systems, sensing, IoT, video analytics or AI/ML enabled products would be highly regarded.
