About the Role

The Director of Early Literacy upholds the bar of rigor across RMP's full ECE–5 literacy program — spanning both foundational reading skills and content-rich ELA instruction. This director oversees the implementation and execution of exemplary literacy instruction ECE-5. Additionally, they lead the design, monitoring, and refinement of scope and sequences, assessments, and instructional materials to ensure alignment with grade-level rigor. They manage the assessment lifecycle — including creation, revision, protocols, and integrity — while using data analysis to inform responsive instructional planning in collaboration with key stakeholders. The Director also develops and facilitates a yearlong professional development vision in collaboration with their manager aligned to network priorities. Instructional expertise, an unwavering belief in student ability, and collaborative leadership are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities1. Resource Management
  • Develop and maintain normed, network-wide scope and sequences for all assigned content areas.
  • Create and revise internal assessments to ensure alignment with grade-level rigor, network assessment strategy, and scope & sequence.
  • Oversee curriculum materials management across campuses by supporting effective use, coordinating annual spring inventories, and partnering with vendors to order materials as needed.
2. Assessment Management
  • Develop or revise assessments to ensure alignment with grade-level standards and rigor.
  • Design and communicate clear assessment protocols to support consistent implementation across campuses.
  • Monitor the fidelity of assessment administration and the integrity of assessment outcomes.
  • Track and support timely, accurate data entry and ensure high levels of student participation.
3. Data Analysis and Response
  • Analyze student data to interpret outcomes and identify trends, collaborating with key stakeholders to create targeted instructional plans in response.
  • Partner with the Director of Data and Assessment to ensure a cohesive approach to data analysis, strategy development, and progress monitoring across the network.
4. Professional Development
  • In collaboration with the Academic Team, develop a year-long vision for professional development across the full ECE–5 literacy continuum.
  • Plan and facilitate high-quality professional development sessions, and partner with external vendors as needed to support teacher growth and capacity building.
5. On Campus Development
  • Conduct campus walkthroughs to monitor curriculum implementation and follow up on professional development outcomes.
  • Coach campus leaders towards exemplary literacy instruction ECE-5.
  • Provide targeted support to ensure the use of rigorous teaching practices through leading lesson internalization meetings, modeling instruction, and responding to data.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Deep knowledge of the science of reading and evidence-based literacy instruction, including foundational reading skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).
  • Deep understanding of content-rich literacy instruction and building background knowledge, with particular expertise in curricula like CKLA Knowledge.
  • Strong assessment literacy, with the ability to set a cohesive vision for K–5 literacy assessments — spanning both foundational tools (DIBELS, mCLASS, STAR) and curriculum-embedded assessments — and use data to drive reteach plans and instructional improvement.
  • Knowledge of the Common Core shifts in literacy and how to ensure alignment to these shifts in curriculum implementation.
  • Experience overseeing or managing a literacy intervention program, including assessment, grouping, and curriculum fidelity.
  • Experience teaching or supporting the implementation of a new curriculum, with the ability to reflect on effective practices and contribute to building teacher and leader capacity around instructional materials.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in education, including teaching, instructional coaching, or leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of driving academic excellence and closing opportunity gaps for historically marginalized student groups.

  • Experience leading implementation of CKLA Skills and CKLA Knowledge.
  • Familiarity with key K–5 literacy assessments (e.g., DIBELS, mCLASS, STAR, ANET, or curriculum-embedded assessments) and how to leverage data to inform instruction.
  • Experience supporting school-based reteach planning or instructional cycles tied to interim assessments.
  • Ability to effectively support or coach teachers and school leaders to strengthen both early literacy instruction and content-rich ELA.
  • Experience in a charter school or multi-site educational organization.
