About the role
The Director of Data Engineering is responsible for defining and executing the long-term technical strategy of the enterprise data platform while ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable day-to-day operations. This role combines deep technical leadership, architecture ownership, client engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and team management.
What you will do
Architecture & Delivery Oversight
- Oversee the design, development, and delivery of data pipelines, platform enhancements, and large-scale data solutions.
- Review engineering designs, remove technical blockers, and lead architectural decision-making.
- Ensure all technical solutions support scalability, performance, reliability, and cost-efficient operations.
Strategy & Platform Architecture
- Define the long-term data platform vision, including data lake/warehouse strategy, governance frameworks, data modeling, and technology tooling.
- Drive strategic alignment between platform architecture and organizational goals.
- Establish and enforce architectural standards ensuring consistency and future platform growth.
Technical Leadership
- Own the overall technical strategy while managing critical operational priorities.
- Define and approve technical and behavioral acceptance criteria.
- Participate in client VOC discussions to gather requirements.
- Lead architecture and system design reviews.
- Guide engineering best practices.
- Drive cloud cost-optimization efforts.
- Partner with business leaders to define ROI and platform investment impact.
- Develop and manage budget for the department, including employee, contractor and cloud spending.
Stakeholder & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with product, analytics, ML, engineering, and executive leadership.
- Translate business objectives into scalable technical solutions.
- Influence roadmap prioritization based on business and technical needs.
- Participates in focused technical discussions with key clients.
Vendor Management
- Act as a technical and business liaison with vendors.
Operations, Governance & Optimization
- Ensure platform reliability, data quality, observability, and compliance.
- Lead governance activities including audits and access reviews.
- Serve as the ISO audit point of contact.
People Leadership & Team Management
- Hire, mentor, and develop data engineering talent.
- Establish performance expectations and foster a culture of quality and accountability.
What we look for
- 7 + years of experience in data architecture, cloud-based data infrastructure, distributed systems, and building reliable data pipelines that support analytics and AI/ML workloads.
- Strong expertise in data architecture, cloud data platforms, and building scalable data pipelines using technologies such as AWS/Azure/GCP, Snowflake, Databricks, or Spark.
- Experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines.
- Proven engineering leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Experience aligning data strategy with business outcomes.
- Experience in regulated industries such as healthcare or education. (preferred)
- Background in cloud cost optimization and platform modernization. (preferred)
Education
- Bachelor's in computer science, computer information or any related discipline with equivalent combination of work and experience. (required)
- Master's in computer science, computer information or any related discipline (preferred)
