The Role
Own the company-wide business intelligence and dashboard function, including Power BI, semantic data layers, reporting standards, and analytics resources. Partner with operating teams and senior stakeholders to prioritize root causes, standardize workflows, and drive cross-functional initiatives while maintaining accountability with functional owners.
Summary Generated by Built In

The START Center for Cancer Research (“START”) is the world’s largest early phase site network, fully dedicated to oncology clinical research. Throughout our history, START has provided hope to cancer patients in global community practices by offering "Hope Through Access” to cutting edge trials throughout the United States and Europe.

Position Summary

The Director, Data Analytics is a shared service that sits in Technology and works across the entire company: revenue cycle, clinical operations, finance, and study startup. You will do three things that usually live in three different jobs. You will build the data and reporting layer people actually trust. You will help re-engineer the processes the data exposes as broken. And you will sit with the teams doing the work and help them organize themselves around a single way of doing things. You will own our dashboard and business intelligence capability, and you will report directly to the CTO.

This is a remote role. The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $200,000. However, base pay may vary depending on multiple individualized factors including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Work Hours: M-F, 8am-5pm

Location: Remote

Essential Responsibilities

Data analytics and business intelligence

  • Own the dashboard and reporting function end to end, including the Power BI estate and the analysts and vendor resources who build it. Set the standards, the intake path, and the definition of a number that leadership can rely on.
  • Co-own the definition of the semantic data layers exposed to the organization jointly with our Data Architecture team
  • Build the analysis that shows where problems concentrate, not one instance at a time. When an issue has happened a thousand times, we need to see that and fix it in bulk.
  • Work directly in the data warehouse and back-end systems. This is a hands-on role; you will write queries and build models yourself, not just brief someone who does.
  • Establish the control mechanisms and measures that tell us whether a fix actually held.

Process engineering

  • Diagnose why a process produces bad data, and redesign it. Most of our data quality problems are process problems wearing a data costume.
  • Drive toward one process and one tool per job. Today too many teams have several ways to do the same thing, which is why nobody moves fast.
  • Trace issues from source system through every downstream system, and establish where the break actually occurred rather than where it surfaced.

Working with the teams

  • Sit with operating teams and help them organize their own work. Surface the issues, rank them, build the root-cause view, and drive to named action items.
  • Quarterback across functions. You surface, analyze and rank; accountability for execution stays with the function owners. That boundary is intentional and it is what makes the role work.
  • Bring the data firepower to whatever the company’s priority initiative is that quarter.

Required Education and Experience

  • 7+ years working with data in a complex, multi-system business, including time where you owned the analysis rather than just produced the report.
  • Deep fluency in a modern data stack. We run Azure SQL and Databricks with Power BI on top.
  • A systems mind applied to business problems. Many of the best people in this role did not come up through analytics; they came up through engineering, finance operations, or somewhere they had to fix a broken process with no authority to do it.
  • Good knowledge of financial processes, operational KPIs, definition and implementation of measures and derivation of source data meaningful to the business
  • Demonstrated process redesign, not just process documentation. You should be able to describe a workflow you rebuilt and what changed as a result.
  • The ability to work with AI-enabled tools as a genuine multiplier. We use Claude and Copilot heavily. This works when you already know what good output looks like and can interrogate what you get back; it fails when someone expects the tool to supply the expertise. We will want to hear how you work with them.
  • Credibility with senior stakeholders and the judgment to tell a function head their process is the problem without turning it into a fight.
  • Comfort building in a company that is still maturing.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Healthcare, clinical research, or another regulated environment.
  • Revenue cycle, order-to-cash, or billing operations exposure.
  • Experience standing up a BI or analytics function rather than inheriting one.
  • Python or a similar language for data work beyond SQL.
  • Having managed a small team or vendor resources while staying hands-on yourself.

Physical and Travel Requirements

  • Approximately 80% of time is spent sitting.
  • Very fast-paced and ever-changing healthcare environment.
  • Demanding deadlines and time frames.
  • Constant demand for updating knowledge.
