About the role:  

As a Director, Compliance Advisory, you will support the VP, Business Conduct & CPO in the general development, implementation, oversight and administration of the Bank’s consumer protection and privacy programs.
Specific purpose of the role involves the provision of general compliance advisory support with emphasis on acting as the liaison between business units and consumer protection and privacy regulators; provide strategic advice to business units to understand their compliance obligations, identify and remediate compliance gaps; and generate reporting on compliance issues.


What you’ll do: 

Compliance Advisory (50%)

  • Identify, interpret and assess legislative and regulatory risks and impacts to the Company, in particular relating to consumer protection and privacy for a designated product portfolio.
  • Proactively monitor, identify and report on compliance changes, trends and other forward looking compliance matters, specifically associated to consumer protection and privacy.
  • Provide compliance advisory support (to detect/identify/prevent potential compliance problems) on internal projects and other initiatives requiring compliance certification (with an emphasis on consumer protection and privacy).
  • Advise on RCM reportable events, breaches and other instances of non-compliance as well as remedial action steps with emphasis on consumer protection and privacy.  Track any issues to full resolution
  • Review marketing, sales and product materials and communications to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Provide support to the VP, Business Conduct & CPO on consumer Protection and privacy matters in the annual Compliance Plan.
  • Advise the VP, Business Conduct & CPO on compliance policy recommendations.
  • Provide advisory support on preparing the annual CCO & CAMLO reports, including required consumer protection reporting.
  • Report on the status of consumer protection and privacy programs to the VP, Business Conduct & CPO.
  • Promote accountability and ownership for compliance risk management.
  • Generate compliance risk awareness within the designated product portfolio – with focus on consumer protection and privacy requirements.
  • Provide subject matter expertise, guidance and coaching to internal Compliance staff on general compliance matters with emphasis on consumer protection and privacy.
  • Liaise/manage relationships with the Company’s internal control functions.
  • Provide compliance advisory support for new business initiatives and significant projects through the formal risk assessment process.

Operational Compliance (30%)

  • Implement prudent policies and procedures to: mitigate reputational risk and meet or exceed regulatory requirements; promote a sound compliance culture; and, report to management on compliance with policies and procedures and applicable regulatory requirements for consumer protection and privacy.
  • Periodically monitor compliance with Material Legislative Requirements; investigate and initiate action plans to resolve instances of non-compliance.
  • Conduct Privacy Impact Assessments as required for new/materially revised uses of personal information or system deployments.
  • Review and coordinate responses to formal privacy access requests.
  • Support the development and refinement of compliance policies, procedures and internal controls (including requirements associated to consumer protection privacy).
  • Contribute compliance metrics and other related information as required to support compliance reporting.
  • Provide assistance on compliance-related quality assurance reviews and other monitoring program requirements.

Training (10%)

  • Assist in the development of training initiatives and materials to educate and counsel employees on regulatory issues and other general compliance matters.
  • Build internal expertise as well as general business and corporate compliance knowledge including those associated to consumer protection (FCAC) and privacy.
  • Manage, develop and maintain compliance department training materials, resources and job aids relating to consumer protection and privacy.
  • Maintain knowledge of the Company’s information handling practices in relation to people, processes and technology
  • Maintain knowledge of company’s products
  • Maintain knowledge of the Company’s legislative/regulatory compliance requirements and trends impacting regulated financial services.

People Leadership (15%)

  • Maintain direct supervisory responsibility of staff, coordinate work, and provide coaching and direction to direct reports on compliance initiatives.

Other (5%)

  • Attend relevant committee meetings with the Canadian Bankers Association
  • Other duties as required.

What we’re looking for:  


  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Finance, Law or related field/professional certification/business experience.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in financial services, with a minimum of 10 years in a compliance capacity
  • Strong knowledge of financial regulations and controls
  • Knowledgeable in Canadian private sector privacy legislation
  • Proficiency in French beneficial
  • Ability to analyze and interpret legislative requirements and communicate requirements to affected business units
  • Ability to consult and partner within all levels of the organization including senior level officers
  • Experience leading and coaching teams
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to lead directly and by influence
  • Policy writing
  • Strong expertise in working with regulatory guidelines and requirements

What you can expect - pay & process: 

  • Expected base salary range is $140,000.00 - $155,000.00, plus the opportunity to earn an annual incentive bonus tied to performance.
