DESCRIPTION: 
The Commercial Lines Director is responsible for leading an underwriting territory to achieve profitable growth, retention, underwriting excellence, and agency satisfaction. Reporting to the Vice President of Commercial Lines, this role is accountable for portfolio performance, agency management, talent development, and successful execution of departmental strategies.

The Director partners closely with the Commercial Lines Manager and other business leaders to drive underwriting consistency, operational effectiveness, and continuous improvement while ensuring strong agency relationships and exceptional customer service.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute underwriting strategies that support profitable growth, retention, portfolio management, and agency relationship objectives
  • Monitor underwriting performance, loss trends, agency results, and market conditions to achieve financial and business goals
  • Provide leadership and direction on complex underwriting situations, risk selection decisions, and portfolio management strategies
  • Partner with Sales leadership and agency partners to strengthen relationships, improve market relevance, and capitalize on growth opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Lead, coach, and develop underwriting leaders and associates while fostering a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement
  • Establish performance expectations and ensure effective execution of departmental strategies, initiatives, and business objectives
  • Identify and develop future leaders through succession planning, mentoring, and career development
  • Collaborate with the Vice President, Commercial Lines Manager, and business partners to improve underwriting consistency, operational effectiveness, and overall business performance
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
ESSENTIAL:

  • Demonstrated Commercial Lines underwriting expertise with a strong understanding of risk selection, portfolio management, pricing, and profitability
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to coach, develop, and lead high-performing underwriting teams
  • Strong strategic thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop and execute business plans that drive profitable growth, retention, and underwriting excellence
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret underwriting performance, loss trends, portfolio results, and market conditions
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
  • Ability to influence outcomes and build strong partnerships with agency partners, internal business leaders, and cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change, manage competing priorities, and successfully execute organizational initiatives

PREFERRED:

  • Previous management experience leading underwriting leaders, supervisors, or managers
  • Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, AU, CIC, ARM, or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of Commercial Lines products, underwriting guidelines, agency distribution systems, and insurance marketplace trends
  • Experience developing and executing territory, portfolio, or business unit strategies
  • Experience utilizing underwriting analytics, operational metrics, and data-driven decision-making to improve business performance
  • Demonstrated success driving profitable growth, retention, agency engagement, and underwriting quality results
  • Experience partnering with sales leadership and agency partners to develop and execute growth strategies

REQUIRED:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record consistent with the terms in SECURA's Fleet Vehicle Manual
  • Travel with overnight stays
