The Director, Commercial - Japan is responsible for leading and accelerating the company's commercial performance across Japan through the development and execution of integrated strategies spanning E-Commerce, Retail, and Wholesale channels. In partnership with the Country Director, this role influences the Japan P&L, drives revenue growth, enhances brand presence, and ensures consistent execution of commercial objectives across all consumer touchpoints. This role is a strategic lead for the Japan market, balancing short-term business performance with long-term brand and market development objectives.

As Director, Commercial - Japan, you will be a key member of the Japan Leadership Team, partnering closely with leaders across the business to drive sustainable growth, elevate the consumer experience, and strengthen the brand's position in the Japanese market.

If you were the Director, Commercial now, here are some of the core activities you would be doing

  • Develop and execute the commercial strategy for Japan to deliver sustainable revenue growth, profitability, and market share gains across E-Commerce, Retail, and Wholesale channels.
  • In partnership with the Country Director, Japan, this role will be responsible for the Japan commercial P&L, including annual business planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance management.
  • Analyze market, consumer, and competitive trends to identify growth opportunities and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Lead and inspire a high-performing commercial team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with regional and global stakeholders to ensure alignment between commercial priorities and broader business objectives.
  • Establish clear performance metrics and leverage data-driven insights to drive business results and operational excellence.
  • Oversee the growth and profitability of the e-commerce business, including DTC and marketplace channels.
  • Optimize digital trading, merchandising, assortment, pricing, promotional strategies, and customer journey performance.
  • Drive customer acquisition, retention, and lifetime value through a consumer-centric and data-led approach.
  • Lead the retail business to deliver exceptional customer experiences, strong sales productivity, and profitable store performance.
  • Ensure execution excellence across the retail fleet, including staffing, productivity, inventory management, and operational standards.
  • Evaluate and support retail expansion, relocation, and investment opportunities within the Japanese market.
  • Develop and execute wholesale and key account strategies that drive revenue growth while maintaining brand integrity.
  • Build and strengthen senior relationships with wholesale partners, distributors, and strategic accounts.
  • Lead account planning, commercial negotiations, and joint business initiatives to maximize sell-through and mutual growth.
  • Champion an omnichannel strategy that creates a seamless and consistent consumer experience across all customer touchpoints.
  • Ensure alignment across channels regarding assortment, pricing, promotions, and brand presentation.
  • Collaborate closely with Marketing, Finance, Supply Chain, People & Culture, and other cross-functional partners to achieve business objectives.
  • Act as a key member of the Japan Leadership Team, contributing to overall market strategy, organizational effectiveness, and long-term growth.
  • Represent the business internally and externally as a senior commercial leader and brand ambassador for Japan.

  • Leading the integration of omnichannel initiatives that create a seamless consumer experience across E-Commerce, Retail, and Wholesale.
  • Expanding strategic partnerships with key wholesale accounts and digital marketplaces to unlock new growth opportunities.
  • Driving digital transformation initiatives that enhance customer acquisition, retention, conversion, and lifetime value.

Are you our next Director, Commercial?

  • You have 12+ years of vertical DTC experience, Ecommerce, and Wholesale that ensures you’re always thinking in the shoes of the guest, with their omni-channel experience as top priority
  • You have strong financial forecasting and budgeting experience
  • You have fluency in both English and Japanese, both verbally and in writing.
  • You have strong communication skills, excellent writing skills, attention to detail and discipline. 
  • You are passionate about data, and possess advanced MS Excel or other relevant software skills, with experience using data to drive business decisions
  • You are a strong communicator and leader with direct experience in leading teams. You can get the best out of a supporting team and will work with cross functional teams from other channels of the business
  • You have graduated from a post-secondary school program with honours that helped to develop communication and analytical skills
  • You remain highly flexible and adaptable when faced with ambiguity, especially when it comes to mastering new software systems
  • You’re always thinking of Arc’teryx in a global, sustainable fashion; finding initiatives that work both globally and for the long term
  • You are innovative and creative, with a logical and methodical approach to problem solving

Skills Required
