We are seeking an experienced Director of Benefits / Total Rewards to lead the design, implementation, and administration of comprehensive benefits programs for a large, complex healthcare organization.

This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of benefits strategy, compliance, vendor management, and team leadership, ensuring programs are competitive, compliant, and aligned with organizational goals.

Position Overview

The Director of Benefits will lead enterprise-wide benefits strategy across health and welfare plans, retirement programs, and wellness initiatives. This role partners closely with senior HR leadership to deliver a cohesive Total Rewards strategy that attracts and retains top talent while maintaining cost efficiency and regulatory compliance.

This position also oversees vendor relationships, benefits communications, and system enhancements, while leading a team responsible for day-to-day benefits operations.

Key Responsibilities
Benefits Strategy & Program Design
• Design, implement, and administer comprehensive benefits programs aligned with business objectives
• Evaluate and enhance benefit offerings to remain competitive and cost-effective
• Lead Total Rewards strategy in partnership with Compensation and HR leadership
Compliance & Governance
• Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations including ERISA, IRS, DOL, HIPAA, COBRA, and FMLA
• Oversee reporting and disclosure requirements for all benefit plans
• Manage risk and ensure regulatory adherence across all programs
Vendor & Partner Management
• Manage relationships with consultants, brokers, actuaries, and third-party administrators
• Evaluate vendor performance and drive service improvements
• Lead contract negotiations and benefit plan renewals
Operations & Process Improvement
• Oversee benefits administration and delivery processes
• Partner with HRIS and IT teams to enhance systems and automation tools
• Ensure accurate and efficient benefits enrollment and reporting processes
Leadership & Team Management
• Lead and develop a high-performing benefits team
• Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities
• Align team performance with organizational goals and service standards
Analytics & Reporting
• Develop and track KPIs to measure program effectiveness and ROI
• Provide insights on cost trends, utilization, and program performance
• Support financial forecasting and strategic planning
Employee Experience & Communication
• Ensure effective communication of benefits programs to employees
• Serve as escalation point for complex benefits issues
• Support a people-first, service-oriented culture



RequirementsRequired Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field
• 10+ years of experience managing benefits programs in a complex organization
• Strong experience with health & welfare, retirement (401k, 403b), and non-qualified plans
• Deep knowledge of ERISA, IRS, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, and healthcare reform regulations
• Experience managing benefits vendors and external partners
• Prior experience with HRIS systems
• Proven leadership experience managing and developing teams
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or related field)
• Certifications such as CEBS, CBP, or other HR-related credentials
• Experience in healthcare or large multi-site organizations
• Experience designing or leading wellness programs
