Job Overview

As a director – Backend Engineering, you will be required to keep and raise the bar of engineering excellence, setting up growth paths and structure for the team, establishing best practices for the team to function efficiently.

Job Description

You will be responsible for managing the engineering charter for Third party compliance and Interpreter Hub applications. In addition, you will be focused on enhancing reliability across our Fulfillment, Logistics, Returns, Fraud, and Labor Management technology stack. In this role, you will partner closely with engineering and operations teams to identify systemic reliability risks, define best practices. You will lead efforts to build scalable tools, frameworks, and automation that improve observability, incident response, and root cause analysis, while fostering a culture of proactive reliability engineering. This role is critical to strengthening our platform’s resilience and ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery across our core operational domains. This role will also play vital role in building Coupang India Technology center, setting up right practices and culture and multi geography team. This role will have managers from other regions reporting to him/her.

Key Skills and Role Responsibilities:

• Experience as people manager and passionate towards building and growing a high performing engineering team.
• Proficient in System Design, Design patterns, database structure, Linux/Unix. Experience with backend technologies and distributed systems. 
• Identify opportunities to make disruptive improvements with existing architecture and partner with senior architecture and product to build roadmap and long term vision.
• Possess expert knowledge in performance (sub millisecond latencies), scalability, availability (99.999% uptime), enterprise architecture best practices.
• Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.
• Strong problem-solving skills, analytical capabilities, and attention to details
• Collaborate with customers, stakeholders and lead engineers on key mission-critical projects

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree and/or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent with 15+ Years’ experience in Software Engineering.   
• 5+ years of people management experience.
• Excellent cross-group collaboration, outstanding verbal and written communication.

Preferred Qualifications

Our Hybrid work model: Coupang hybrid work model is designed to enable a culture of collaboration that acts a catalyst to enrich the experience of employees. Employees are required to work at least 3 days in the office per week, with the flexibility to work from home 2 days a week, depending on the role requirement. Some businesses may require more time in office due to nature of work.
