Optum is seeking a highly skilled Director of Machine Learning Engineering to join our dynamic team. You will work on cutting-edge Generative AI technology projects to solve complex business problems across the company. You are a solid leader with skills and a foundation in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, and cloud-native system design.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and be accountable for delivery of key programs focused on AI/ML
  • Technical leadership in architecture, engineering, data strategy while establishing best practices for programs
  • Focused on design, development, and implementation of software solutions using Generative AI, AI/ML technologies
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and solve business problems using AI, Machine Learning and/or Reinforcement Learning
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, reliable and high-performing software systems
  • Maintain, recommend and improve existing software applications using AI and/or Automation
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in Generative AI and integrate them into projects
  • Lead and mentor of junior engineers and contribute to team professional growth
  • Drives improvement beyond minimal compliance even in legacy assets
  • Partners effectively with the EIS (Security) and Infrastructure teams when implementing solutions
  • Maintains working knowledge of UHG Security Policies, Tools and Processes
  • Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
  • 10+ years of Professional IT experience in software engineering and engineering leadership roles
  • 5+ years of software engineering/development experience with one or more of the following languages: Python, Golang, JavaScript or TypeScript
  • Experience with DevOps methodologies and enabling Automation within development teams
  • Knowledge and understanding of diverse platforms and operating systems, including current and emerging technologies using cloud (Azure, GCP and/or AWS)
  • Worked hands-on using pre-trained models leveraging Transfer Learning, as well as using frameworks or libraries for NLP (e.g. Hugging Face, spaCy etc.) and CV (e.g. OpenCV)
  • Solid theoretical and practical knowledge of some or most Deep Learning techniques across Recurrent Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks etc. and Transformer Architectures as applied in the domains of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and / or Computer Vision (CV) Consistent track record of building and successfully deploying Machine Learning solutions with demonstrable value to the organization

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Healthcare industry in domains like Claims, Provider, Member, Eligibility or Sales/Marketing
  • Proven solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven to be highly motivated with proven success meeting commitments in a deadline-driven environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Proven to lead change and innovation - pursue opportunities to adopt new technologies and drive adoption to enhance business outcomes - drive and mange high-quality execution across organizational lines
  • Proven ability of developing relationships across technical, management, and executive levels
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple projects and timelines while keeping customers, team and leadership aware of status
