Title and Summary
Director, Advanced Product Management Capability Development
Overview
At Mastercard, Learning & Development (L&D) plays a critical role in building the capabilities that enable product excellence, innovation, and growth. From onboarding through advanced mastery and leadership development, we equip our people to perform in a rapidly evolving, technology-driven environment.
As Mastercard continues to scale its global Product organization, expectations for Product Managers are increasing-particularly in product strategy, discovery, delivery, data-informed decision-making, technical fluency, and emerging capabilities such as AI-enabled product development. This role exists to ensure Product Managers are not only enabled, but capable, with clear and consistent pathways to advanced mastery aligned to business outcomes.
The Director, Advanced Product Management Capability Development is accountable for shaping the global advanced capability strategy for Mastercard's Product Manager community. The role focuses on evolving how Product Managers build mastery over time, from strong foundations to advanced and emerging skills.
This role serves as a critical bridge between the Product Management community and enterprise learning priorities, translating strategy into relevant, scalable, and high-impact capability solutions through partnership with Product leaders, People & Capability (P&C), and delivery partners. Operating through influence and insight, the role requires strong judgment, credibility, and the ability to shape decisions at senior levels across Product, Technology, and P&C.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a strategic learning and performance consultant who:
Has direct experience as a Product Manager and/or leading Product Management capability development in a complex, technology-driven organization.
Brings hands-on understanding of modern product management practices, including strategy, discovery, delivery, experimentation, metrics, and technical collaboration in global, scaled environments.
Operates with an enterprise-first, consultative mindset focused on alignment, scale, and long-term impact rather than standalone programs.
Demonstrates strong judgment in prioritization, favoring reuse and enterprise value over bespoke solutions.
Builds credibility with senior Product, Technology, and P&C stakeholders and influences outcomes without direct authority.
Designs and delivers advanced learning interventions, independently or with internal SMEs and external partners.
Facilitates learning experiences with senior leaders.
Role Responsibilities
Strategy & Capability Architecture
Define and evolve a global, persona-based Product Management capability model aligned to career stages and enterprise expectations.
Translate Product and enterprise strategies into a cohesive advanced capability roadmap, balancing foundational, advanced, and emerging skills.
Partner with Product and P&C leaders to identify capability gaps with the greatest business impact.
Consulting & Advisory
Act as a trusted advisor to senior Product and P&C stakeholders on Product capability priorities.
Lead performance and capability diagnostics to distinguish true capability gaps from perceived learning needs.
Recommend learning and non-learning interventions aligned to long-term performance outcomes.
Portfolio & Investment Stewardship
Own prioritization of Product capability investments with a focus on scale, reuse, and enterprise impact.
Make disciplined decisions to consolidate, redirect, or sunset initiatives that do not deliver clear value.
Ensure alignment with global L&D frameworks while maintaining relevance for Product and technical audiences.
Adoption, Influence & Activation
Influence senior Product leaders to role model and reinforce advanced capability expectations.
Partner with cross-functional teams and delivery partners to drive adoption and activation.
Serve as a central point of consultation for Product capability alignment across regions.
Continuous Improvement
Apply product thinking to capability solutions using feedback loops and evidence of impact.
Monitor effectiveness and adjust priorities based on business signals and stakeholder insight.
Stay current on Product Management and capability-building trends, including AI-enabled product development.

Experience in Learning & Development, Talent Management, Organizational Effectiveness, or related fields with demonstrated accountability.
Direct experience as a Product Manager and/or leading Product Management capability development.
Strong understanding of modern Product Management practices and ways of working.
Deep grounding in adult learning principles and performance consulting applied to real business needs.
Proven ability to consult with senior stakeholders and translate strategy into clear capability priorities.
Comfortable making trade-offs, including saying no and sunsetting low-value initiatives.
Experience working effectively in complex, matrixed organizations.
Experience managing vendors and external delivery partners.
