Your Opportunity

  • Under the direction of the Associate Director College Relations, the Marketing and Communications Specialist I is responsible for preparing a variety of communications and marketing materials for internal and external audiences that have to do with the educational programs, services, activities, brand identity and events in Continuing Studies & Corporate Training.
  • The Marketing and Communications Specialist I will play a role in strategic marketing and communications implementation in Continuing Studies in order to increase visibility and constituent engagement. The Specialist is responsible for research, interviews, writing, social media, multimedia, photography, videography, preparation and co-coordinating various print and electronic communications and marketing materials.
  • This position will also provide the writing for: press releases, internal publications and bulletins, social media feeds, public service announcements, advertisements, annual reports, recruitment materials, and public presentations for Continuing Studies.
  • The Specialist will assist in managing and monitoring Continuing Studies and Corporate Training’ social media feeds, providing relevant content that reinforces the institution’s brand and key messages and will manage the day-to-day online presence for Continuing Studies and Corporate Training including website content.
  • The Marketing and Communications Specialist I will be responsible for developing a marketing strategy, annual marketing plan, writing copy, coordinating imagery for Continuing Studies and Corporate Training and graphics and working with graphic designers and internal client(s).
  • The Marketing and Communications Specialist I will be expected to maintain knowledge of current developments in the communications, marketing, social media and public relations fields and maintain awareness of trends and conditions affecting Okanagan College’s Continuing Studies and Corporate Training activities and operations, in order to suggest content for inclusion in in-house and external publications.
  • The Marketing and Communications Specialist I supports and enhances the efforts of the Director, of Continuing Studies and Corporate Training in fostering a team approach within the institution and is committed to providing quality customer service, as well as furthering communications and marketing strategies outlined by the institution.

Functions and Duties

  • Coordinates development of Continuing Studies’ annual program promotions campaign, that will enhance the profile of the Division both within the College and across the region, and attract certificate program applications and registrations in courses offered. This includes formulating a promotions plan that identifies specific activities, dates, budget allocation and roles.
  • Gathers, synthesizes and communicates current information on Continuing Studies programs, news, developments, events and activities to internal, external and media audiences. In cooperation with OC College Relations, will be responsible for preparing and distributing press releases that promote positive coverage of OC activities.
  • Serves as a resource for management and staff for media relations, marketing and communications strategy.
  • Develops content for marketing and communications activities – print, television, social media, radio, electronic and digital. Assists in design and oversees production and distribution of these materials.
  • Works with graphic designers to develop and complete marketing and communications materials, for both print and web publishing.
  • Participates in OC committees and various ad hoc committees, social media teams and task forces as directed by the Director.
  • Responsible for photography and videography to enhance promotional efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree – concentration or major in journalism, communications or marketing is required. Two to four years experience in marketing, journalism, and/or communications role. Professional development in Social Media is an asset. Specialized training in marketing (in addition to a bachelor’s degree) is an asset.

  • Strong new judgement and familiarity with Canadian Press style, data collection and reporting, editing
  • Consistent use of brand principles to leverage marketing activities
  • Excellent computer skills (PC and Mac platforms) with proficiency using Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and web-based applications.
  • Proficiency with social media channels and corresponding management tools (Hootsuite, Facebook Business Manager, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Content Management Software is an asset.
  • Proficiency using a digital camera and editing photos and video is considered an asset
