The American Association for the Advancement of Science, America’s largest general scientific society, seeks a Digital Communications Manager to join the Office of Communications to lead digital strategy, storytelling and content at the organizational level. This role will oversee content strategy and develop timely web content for AAAS.org and partner on compelling, data-informed digital storytelling. The Manager will also work across the team on integrated external and public affairs campaigns that enhance brand reputation, advance organizational strategic pillars, and drive thought leadership around the role of science for society.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage web content strategy for AAAS.org and other digital properties as appropriate in collaboration with the Information Technology team and web colleagues across AAAS.
  • Lead digital storytelling at the organizational level with the Social Media Manager.
  • Write, edit and publish content for AAAS.org, including strategic communications priorities, announcements and thought leadership in collaboration with subject matter experts and AAAS leaders.
  • Partner with creative and brand teammates on multimedia assets for the website.
  • Work with the Office of Communications team on integrated external and public affairs campaigns and issues management, and project manage select announcements and events.
  • Oversee design and infrastructure improvements for AAAS.org and other digital properties as appropriate in partnership with the Creative and Brand Manager, key departments, and external vendors, ensuring adherence to accessibility, search and answer engine optimization best practices.
  • Lead web subgroup of the AAAS Marketing Communications Network, including setting the strategy, developing materials, hosting quarterly meetings and maintaining editorial standards.
  • Strategize and deploy digital analytics tracking and dashboards and evaluate data to optimize campaigns and achieve goals in collaboration with the Social Media Manager; participate in cross-team and cross-departmental digital analytics meetings with the Social Media Manager.
  • Support marketing and communications efforts to promote the AAAS Annual Meeting; set news coverage strategies and write stories; and support on-the-ground efforts during the meetings.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5-7 years of digital communications experience as part of integrated campaigns, preferably in public affairs, government relations or advocacy spaces.
  • Experience managing a website using the content management system Drupal and overseeing a redesign or overhaul with outside consultants.
  • Highly skilled in news writing and editing with the ability to generate accurate, in-depth copy, including both feature stories as well as scientific, technical, and science policy content.
  • Proficiency and comfort editing in AP style.
  • Basic multimedia editing skills using software such as Canva and Adobe products.
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization strategies and interest in how AI-powered search is transforming the digital landscape.
  • Knowledge of how to build audience profiles to effectively target content and measure campaign effectiveness.
  • Experience with digital analytics platforms such as Adobe Analytics a plus; ability to evaluate and leverage digital analytics to guide decision-making.

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $90,000 – $100,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
