The role
We are inviting applications for the position of Automation Development Scientist I/II. The successful candidate will work as a member of the Applications and Product Development Department. This individual will be responsible for designing, developing, optimizing, and maintaining laboratory automation workflows in support of product development activities at NEB. This position offers opportunities to strategize, optimize processes, learn from colleagues and align with other groups and departments across the company to deliver impactful solutions.
How you’ll contribute:
Design, build, and validate end-to-end laboratory automation protocols for high‑throughput NGS sequencing/other technologies using liquid handlers, and other integrated instrumentation
Optimize existing workflows to enhance reliability, reproducibility, precision, and throughput
Troubleshoot automation performance issues across hardware, software, and functional assays
Implement and maintain high throughput automation platforms
Evaluate new automation technologies and lead pilots or onboarding of new equipment.
Partner with SMEs to translate manual assays into automated methods.
Develop documentation, SOPs, and training materials for automated workflows.
Provide hands-on training and support to lab teams on automated protocols, platforms and best practices
Assist customers with technical inquiries regarding NEB products
Work closely across the Applications and Development teams and other departments to integrate automation solutions that accelerate discovery
Required Qualifications and Experience:
PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field with minimum 2 years of experience (or master’s with 5 years of experience)
Experience in protocol design, troubleshooting and implementation on various liquid handling platforms (such as Agilent Bravo, Hamilton, Revvity, Beckman, SPT Labtech, etc.)
Working knowledge of LIMS/ELN integration, data pipelines, and experiment tracking systems
Have "good hands" with proven bench skills
Strong ability to multi-task, self-manage and perform effectively in a fast-paced team
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Be goal and deadline oriented with exceptional attention to detail
Have a strong work ethic, emphasizing integrity, efficiency and quality of work
What will make you stand out:
Experience in molecular biology techniques, high-throughput screening (HTS) or assay development preferred
Knowledge of Next Generation Sequencing workflows preferred
Estimated base salary hiring range for a Development Scientist I/II, Automation is $85,000 - $100,000
Base salary is one component of our generous total rewards compensation package. Employees are eligible to receive:
- Annual discretionary profit-sharing bonus
- Participation in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan "ESOP" (eligible after two full years of service)
- Exceptional benefits package at a nominal cost to the employee including a 10% 401k match
