PURVIS has an immediate full-time position open for an Electrical Designer/Drafter supporting electrical design and drafting efforts for U.S. Navy submarine programs. Under the guidance of senior designers and engineers, this position develops and updates technical drawings, conducts ship checks, and assists with electrical documentation in accordance with Navy and company standards. This role provides a clear pathway to advancement through hands‑on experience, training, and demonstrated performance.
The day-to-day responsibilities of this role include:
- Develop 2D cabling diagrams, system interface diagrams, wiring tables, installation drawings, and arrangement drawings.
- Create and maintain Lists of Material (LOM); interpret Government Furnished Information (GFI) to meet design requirements.
- Perform basic electrical power distribution analysis, including voltage drop and load balancing calculations.
- Conduct ship checks aboard U.S. Navy submarines to collect field data, verify configurations, and support installation planning.
- Update drawings using redline input from senior personnel; perform self‑checks for accuracy and compliance.
- Participate in internal design reviews and incorporate feedback.
- Communicate with engineers, designers, and project staff to clarify design intent and task requirements.
- Ensure designs/drawings comply with standard drafting practices, as well as specific U.S. Navy standards and practices, including ASME Y14.3.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in electronic engineering technology or related electrical/electronic discipline preferred.
- 1 - 4 years professional experience in electrical system design or drafting. Entry-level candidates with relevant education will be considered.
- Familiarity with submarine platforms, ship systems, or Navy alternation packages (i.e., TEMPALT/OPALT, SHIPALT).
- Prior work experience with military specifications or defense programs.
- Understanding of electrical power and data network systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical/electronic specifications and technical drawings.
- Basic understand of drafting standards. Familiarity with ASME Y14.3 preferred.
- Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD® or similar 2D drafting tools; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
- Foundational understanding of electrical/electronic engineering principles and circuit design.
- This position will require occasional travel to Naval installations for ship checks across all submarine classes. Ability to conduct ship checks, work in confined spaces, and climb 20–25 ft vertical ladders unassisted.
Skills Required
- 1-4 years professional experience in electrical system design or drafting (entry-level candidates considered)
- Ability to obtain a government security clearance to the level of SECRET
- Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD or similar 2D drafting tools
- Ability to perform ship checks aboard U.S. Navy submarines, work in confined spaces, and climb 20-25 ft vertical ladders unassisted
- Understanding of electrical power distribution, voltage drop and load balancing calculations
