Mechanical Designer
IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Designer/PDM Administrator with a strong background in using Solidworks, drafting component and assembly drawings, ECN processes, and in setting up and managing Solidworks PDM vault for the Engineering Team. As a member of the Engineering organization, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
In this role, you will collaborate with a highly interdisciplinary team of atomic physicists, optical engineers, optomechanical engineers, electrical engineers, cryosystem engineers, thermal engineers, and program managers to influence, design, and build our upcoming products. You will contribute across the entire product lifecycle from conceptual design through the first engineering units. You’ll develop requirements, perform trade studies, and design our current and next-generation hardware for our quantum computers.
Responsibilities:
- Provide design and drafting support to the members of the Mechanical and Optomechanical Engineering teams
- Create drawings of system components, exploded assembly drawings and other internal systems that lack appropriate documentation
- Assist with migration of system hardware designs to SolidWorks from Onshape, and re-featuring Onshape parts for various systems, where necessary
- Working with other team members, help establish enterprise-level PDM processes and controls and assist in establishing IonQ PDM vault standards
- Assist with setting up engineering change control processes, and implementing ECN controls in PDM
- Assist in designing tools and fixtures for assembly and alignment of opto-mechanical hardware and subsystems
- Assist with reviewing and checking designs and their associated documentation
- Provide documentation support for all phases of our systems and engineering projects, including, but not limited to, Bill of Material creation, and maintenance of on-market products by helping create and process ECNs
- Assist with updating standards and templates for drawings, as necessary, with embedded links to model properties
- Generate user guides and train relevant team members in proper use of SolidWorks PDM; assist people new to SolidWorks in getting started
- Assist team members in checking in parts/assemblies into PDM in troubleshooting/tracking unique part numbers issues
- The role will initially consist of approximately 50% drafting and limited design work and 50% PDM administration & documentation, data management and PDM vault integrity
You’d be a good fit with:
- Associates degree or better in Design and Mechanical Systems, or a related discipline
- 7+ years of CAD design experience
- Experience in detailed solid modeling of parts and assemblies using 3D CAD programs
- Solid understanding of the flow of engineering documentation, including part number checkouts, engineering change processes, drawing conversions, and sound data and document management practices
- Experience in planning layouts, making drawings, and revising detailed parts, assemblies and engineering drawings
- Experience with drafting detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts for projects to ensure conformance to specifications
- Familiarity with the suite of Atlassian software (e.g Jira)
- The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, analytic, detail-oriented, possesses quantitative analysis skills, is self-motivated, is a great team member, and is able to proactively communicate with peers at all levels.
- Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills are required.
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
You’d be a great fit with:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant discipline
- 10+ years of industry experience in designing parts, assemblies and making detailed drawings using SolidWorks for mechanical, optomechanical and Electrical Systems
- Strong experience as a SolidWorks PDM administrator
- Experience in training junior mechanical designers in drafting methods, standards, GD&T callouts and parts’ release processes
- Experience in managing drafting workloads on variety of projects, setting up and managing parts’ release processes, and improve SolidWorks PDM vault organization, train the engineering design team members on proper use of Solidworks PDM vault, and managing the PDM vault to ensure its integrity
- Experience working under minimal supervision to guide other mechanical designers and coordinating all drafting activities to complete and release all drawings on schedule.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work well with colleagues and customers in a team environment
