Senior Hardware Engineer - Image Quality
Description
The Senior Hardware Engineer - Image Quality is responsible for both camera and system level image quality for the viewing and perception video pipelines. It is imperative that Image quality is at the forefront as the industry trends towards greater use of cameras to execute features in both the perception and viewing spaces.
Job Role Expectations
- Manage camera suppliers to provide world class Image Quality performance on both viewing and perception systems.
- Experience with tuning cameras for perception using OpenCV and/or other industry approaches
- Engage and work with ISP suppliers to modify registers for improvements to IQ performance, based on lab, bench and real-world IQ testing and evaluations
- Tune cameras in a bench environment, subsystem environment and vehicle environment in all possible scenarios
- Conduct real world studies for conclusive improvements with different combinations of camera, subsystem and display units.
- Lead lab studies to investigate upcoming IQ related architecture decisions (i.e., YUV422 and/or YUV444)
- Ability to create simulation videos for visualization and decision making for leadership (i.e., simulate 30 fps vs 60 fps to determine best setting for nighttime performance)
- Ability to troubleshoot and root cause low level image quality issues at component, subsystem, and vehicle level and lead responsible stake holders to make improvements
- Ability to compile Image quality firmware and test for discrepancies in all different scenarios
- Develop and document repeatable/robust use cases & test cases to evaluate IQ performance under all environmental scenarios (daytime/nighttime, dawn/dusk, etc.)
- Knowledge of coding in MATLAB, C++ Python to perform objective analysis of camera imagery
- Capable of reproducing IQ problem from real-world to laboratory by using necessary equipment.
- Experience with imager bring-up.
- Ability to compute 'look-up tables' for camera performance on system level using objective methods, simulation, and DFSS studies for recommending best possible ISP register values
- Manage component, subsystem and vehicle schedule for tuning, testing and validation activities.
- Ability to visualize changes to noise, sensitivity, contrast at different environments and decide a best combination that suits multiple combinations of cameras, displays in varying lighting conditions.
- Deep-dive knowledge on ISP algorithms such as AE, CCM, DNS HDR, AWB, ALTM, LTM, CS, EE.
- Ability to isolate and test individual blocks for continuous improvements.
Technical Skills
- Previous experience working with ISP to tune image quality for "viewing" (human eye)
- Auto/Manual Exposure, Auto White Balance, gain ratios, tone mapping, lens shading correction, de-mosaic, color correction, noise reduction, edge sharpening
- Previous experience working with ISP to tune image quality for "perception" (algorithm)
- Lead regression testing to ensure ISP changes do not increase false positives rate
- CMOS image sensor characterization and bring up
- Image quality evaluation and KPI metric development for different scenarios
- Camera module optics design and evaluation
- Image signal processing, ISP tuning for image quality improvement
Additional Description
Social Skills
- Strong negotiation ability: Majority of Image Quality tuning success results from proper negotiation with supplier
- Self-reliant: Organize PDT/working meetings with supplier to identify IQ maturity, then work with supplier to tune system (performing evaluations along the way to ensure tunning changes do not introduce unwanted affects)
- Personable/Resourceful: In order to properly tune IQ, cross-functional collaboration is required between multiple teams across multiple organizations (GM, Tier 1, Tier 2, etc.)
- Vigilant: In order to properly evaluate and consequently tune IQ parameters for all daytime/nighttime conditions, it is required to work in all lighting conditions (ex. nights)
- Strong Presentation Skills: One must be able to provide concise/clear updates to leadership regarding progress and issues during IQ tuning.
