The Design Manager will lead a team of CAD engineers and designers responsible for creating 3D models and reviewing mechanical and electrical drawings for energy storage Enclosures and full system-level drawings for Fluence’s product line. This role also oversees the development of core drawings and manufacturing documentation to ensure that the units are ready for production in Fluence’s manufacturing facilities. The Design Manager will manage internal CAD designers and external contractors, ensuring high-quality, manufacturable designs that meet industry standards. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance analysis, welding callouts, and electrical schematics, with a focus on delivering production-ready designs.

As the Design Manager at Fluence Energy, you will be responsible for:

  • Team Leadership and Management:
  • Lead and mentor a team of CAD engineers and designers to create 3D models, mechanical and electrical drawings for energy storage enclosure and system-level design.
  • Manage external CAD contractors, ensuring alignment with Fluence’s quality standards and timely delivery of all design outputs.
  • Create and check mechanical and electrical designs, including enclosure systems and core product drawings, ensuring that they meet functional, manufacturing, and safety requirements.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment that promotes best practices and continuous improvement in design and production readiness.

  • Enclosure and Core Design:
  • Oversee the design and development of energy storage enclosures and associated components, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and manufacturability.
  • Ensure that all drawings and related documentation accurately reflect the design intent and are suitable for production in Fluence’s manufacturing facilities.
  • Collaborate with Enclosure Engineering team to ensure that enclosure designs meet environmental, structural, and safety standards required for energy storage systems.
  • Optimize designs for ease of assembly, transportation, and scalability, focusing on reducing costs and improving production efficiency.

  • Design and Quality Control:
  • Work with Enclosure Engineering team to review drawings and models.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and ensure critical dimensions guarantee proper fit, form, and function in production.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and suppliers to ensure that all designs meet production standards and can be built to specification.
  • Implement quality control processes to ensure consistent quality across mechanical and electrical drawings.

  • Manufacturing and Production Support:
  • Provide technical support during the manufacturing process, resolving design issues, and ensuring that the final product meets all design specifications and quality standards.

  • Electrical Design and Schematics:
  • Lead the development of electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, ensuring compliance with performance and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering team to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems within the overall product and enclosure design.
  • Ensure that all electrical designs are documented accurately, including circuit designs and wiring layouts, for use in production.

  • External Contractor and Vendor Management:
  • Manage external CAD contractors to ensure timely delivery of outsourced design work, including enclosure designs and manufacturing drawings.
  • Provide technical guidance to external partners, ensuring that their designs align with Fluence’s requirements for both mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Coordinate with supply chain and procurement teams to ensure that all components meet design and production specifications.

  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:
  • Work closely with engineering, product development, and manufacturing teams to ensure alignment on design outputs for both mechanical and electrical systems, as well as enclosure designs.
  • Collaborate with project management to provide input on timelines, resource allocation, and design milestones.
  • Ensure cross-team collaboration to integrate mechanical and electrical designs into a cohesive product.

What we look for you to bring to Fluence:

  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in CAD design and engineering, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Extensive experience in energy storage enclosure design, mechanical and electrical design, including GD&T, tolerance analysis, welding callouts, and circuit design.
  • Proficiency in PTC CREO and AutoCAD software.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical design standards, as well as manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing external contractors and delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and certification processes related to energy storage systems.

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.

  • Travel: 15-25% domestic and international travel may be required.
