The Role
Creates and modifies complex technical drawings, CAD models, assemblies, and interface control drawings for softgoods, mechanical, electromechanical, and aerospace thermal protection systems. Develops test-fixture designs, applies GD&T and aerospace drafting standards, checks drawing accuracy, and coordinates with engineering, manufacturing, inspection, and quality teams. Supports NASA, DoD, and commercial aerospace programs across ground, orbital, and lunar applications.
Summary Generated by Built In

The primary responsibilities of this position are to create and modify technical drawings of complex components, parts, assemblies and sub-assemblies.  Individual errors will directly affect, to a moderate degree, the overall pace of novel product development, production, quality of product, and overhead costs for programs/products.  More specifically, this position will support the development of softgoods products, such as Thermal Protection Systems (TPS), and mechanical/electromechanical products, such as mounting fixtures.   TPS is used for rockets, in-space cargo vehicles, and human rated flight vehicles, to protect launch vehicle components and structures from the high heat resulting from launch and return.  This position is in direct support of NASA, DoD, and Commercial aerospace customers and includes the development of ground prototypes, test fixtures, and operationally certified products for ground use, earth orbit, cis-lunar orbit, and lunar surface.

Responsibilities

•    Provide detailed design and drawings of softgoods, mechanical, and electromechanical systems, subsystems, and components.
•    Support the development of interface drawings that define detailed features for mechanical and thermal system interfaces for the hardware and TPS being developed.
•    Support the design of unique tests fixtures and their drawing creation.
•    Work in a team environment that includes multi-functional groups such as Mechanical Engineers, Softgoods Designers, Electrical Engineers, Stress Analysts, Production, and Product Assurance.
•    Abides by the procedures and guidelines established in accordance with OSS drafting standards, ASME Y14.5M and NASA document JPR 8500.

•    Create engineering design layouts and assemblies using computer-aided design (CAD) programs, primally CREO, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD. Generate corresponding part, patterns, assembly, and interface control drawings.
•    Use geometric dimensioning and tolerancing when required or pragmatically needed.
•    Check completed drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
•    Identify hardware, materials, and components by using Company procurement documentation system and engineering assistance.
•    Interfaces with machine shop and softgoods personnel on part clearances, tolerances, and manufacturing/machine options, as well as inspection techniques.
