The Design Engineer I designs and/or modifies or assists with the design and/or modification of lift devices and equipment (within the product lines of the Company) from a set of verbal and written specifications.

The position is based at Southworth International Group, Inc. (SIGI) headquarters in Falmouth, ME
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the design of a new product and/or modifications of an existing product from a set of verbal or written practices and procedures for design engineering.
- Design best practices with regards to design calculations
- Ensure design compliance to applicable specifications, codes, and established product safety requirements.
- Define product testing to verify all design and customer criteria are met
- Support Manufacturing with issues on the floor during assembly and timely completion of ECRs
- Support Purchasing with issues regarding part obsolescence and annual cost reduction initiatives
- Assist Sales by providing technical expertise as required
- Provide Quality support as required
- Participate regularly in process improvement projects
- Perform other duties and complete other projects as may be assigned or requested.
Qualifications – Skills and Experience
- BS, Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
- 3D CADD/modeling, Solidworks preferred
- Experience drafting parts and assemblies using industry standard techniques and GD&T
- Basic understanding and ability to perform calculations of Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, and Machine design skills
- Experience with hydraulic or pneumatic power systems
- Experience with fabricated steel weldments
- Able to work effectively and accurately against deadlines and time constraints
- Occasional travel to customer sites
- Travel up to 10% of time
Preferred
- Windows and CAD management system (EPDM) proficiency
- Ability to describe technical concepts to non-technical people
- Creative problem-solving skills
- Good time management skills
- Experience using FEA to evaluate design integrity
- Familiarity with electrical controls and power a plus
- Continuous process improvement (Lean Six Sigma)
