The Opportunity
We are seeking a Design and Drafting Technologist who has knowledge and experience in AutoCAD. This individual has the proven skills, competencies and capacity to perform work required to provide a detailed design package while confirming adherence to TransCanada specifications and standards as well as applicable governmental and industry codes. This individual also assists in the completion of the Design Scope Document and in the resolution of design issues that arise during construction. They may also provide support, guidance and quality control of third-party drafting deliverables while confirming adherence to TransCanada specification and standards.
What you’ll do
- Assist the project engineering team in research, scoping, estimating, and field data collection (as warranted)
- Check-in/check-out project related drawings and coordinate with project teams on the concurrent use of a drawing(s) by two or more projects
- Develop pipeline alignment sheets, environmental conservation and reclamation sheets, crossing plans for acquiring permit approval, and related pipeline construction drawings
- Attend all design review meetings for assigned projects
- Coordinate with internal and external designers and drafters the delivery of construction and as-built drawing(s)
- Provide direction and guidance to third-party engineering and drafting service providers on TC Energy drafting standards
- Perform QA/QC of internal and third-party drawing deliverables during design and as-built phases for conformance to TC Energy drafting standards
- Check all preliminary facility and manufacturing drawings for the correct dimensions, adherence to codes, policies, specifications and standards required by TC Energy
- Determine the type and number of drawings required to provide a complete design package
- Plan, prioritize and track drawings through the project life cycle to meet assigned project(s) schedule(s) and confirm drafting content.
- Develop mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, or instrument/control drawings for engineering design projects to include but not limited to P&ID’s, 3D Models, Piping Plans & Sections, Piping Isometrics, Bills of Material, Grading Plans & Details, Structural Plans, Sections, and Details, One Line Diagrams, Panel Layouts, Wiring Schematics, MCC Plans & Sections, Cable/Conduit Plans, Sections, Details, & Schedules, Lighting Plans, Sections, & Details, Grounding Plans, Sections & Details, Communication Plans & Details, and any other drawings, as required
- Communicate design options and recommend facility design improvements
- Select materials, fittings, wire, etc. within the confines of the job specifications, codes, and standards, as required
- Identify and specify instrumentation and related items from process flow sheets, P&IDs, and piping drawing
- Provide technical assistance and direction to drafting personnel as required
- Reference technical handbooks, codes, and catalogs to assist in the sizing and specifications of necessary equipment and components to complete the design
- Collaborate with outside equipment vendors to gather equipment specifications for new equipment being installed
- Research existing files and databases for map, field notes, and information needed to complete mapping
- Communicate with outside agencies such as highway departments and third-party engineering firms to obtain electronic files of their drawings to use as base maps
- Confirm completion of facility as-built drawings during and after construction completion. Make necessary visits to construction site before, during and after construction
- Evaluate and recommend hardware/software as well as procedures to enable the group to work more effectively
- Collaborate with customers in Project Engineering, Project Management, Operations, Technical Services, and other stakeholders to assure customer satisfaction
- Identify opportunities for improvement to the design review, design management process and document as lessons learned
- Contribute to the continual improvement of the company’s Project Management tools and processes
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of six years drafting design experience required
- Drafting certification or Associates degree in Engineering Technology preferred
- Relevant electrical/instrumentation or civil/mechanical/piping experience
- Must possess proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Microstation
- Experience manipulating and editing 2D and 3D CAD models
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code, as required
- Practical understanding of mechanical, pneumatic and electrical systems
- Ability to perform arithmetic and algebraic calculations
- Ability to work independently
- Proven ability to work in a team environment and be a self-starter
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Must be able to process information and make decisions under tight deadlines
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrates understanding and support of company initiatives and direction
- Seeks out and identifies continuous improvement opportunities; champions implementation
