Job Description

The Derrickman is responsible for supporting safe and efficient drilling operations, particularly activities involving the derrick, travelling equipment, drill string, tubular handling, and drilling fluid systems. The role assists the Driller in maintaining drilling equipment and ensuring that all derrick and drilling-floor activities are carried out safely and in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor derrick equipment, travelling blocks, elevators, and associated drilling equipment.
  • Assist the Driller during tripping, casing, tubular handling, and other drilling operations.
  • Work from the monkey board to guide and handle drill pipe and tubulars during pipe-handling operations.
  • Monitor and maintain drilling fluid/mud systems, including mud tanks, pumps, lines, shakers, and associated equipment.
  • Monitor mud levels and report abnormal changes that may indicate potential well-control issues.
  • Assist with the preparation, transfer, and maintenance of drilling fluids as directed.
  • Conduct routine inspections of derrick, pipe-handling, and drilling equipment.
  • Report equipment defects, leaks, abnormal operating conditions, or safety hazards immediately.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and housekeeping of drilling equipment.
  • Participate in well-control operations and emergency response activities as required.
  • Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with approved drilling procedures, Permit to Work (PTW), JSA/JHA, and company HSE requirements.
  • Maintain good housekeeping around the derrick, drill floor, mud pits, and associated work areas.
  • Assist with lifting and rigging activities within the scope of competence and authorization.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, drills, and training programmes.
  • Properly use and maintain assigned PPE and safety equipment.
  • Support the Driller and other members of the drilling crew in achieving operational targets.
  • Maintain accurate operational and equipment records where required.
  • Carry out other duties assigned by the Driller or Rig Management.

HSE Responsibilities

  • Comply with company HSE policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and report unsafe acts, conditions, and potential environmental hazards.
  • Stop or suspend work where an immediate safety risk exists and notify the appropriate supervisor.
  • Participate actively in emergency drills, including well-control and evacuation exercises.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of chemicals and drilling fluids.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the drilling crew.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Secondary School Certificate/OND/NABTEB or relevant technical qualification; additional technical training is an advantage.
  • Relevant Derrickman/Drilling Operations certification is preferred.
  • Typically 2–5 years of relevant drilling-rig experience, including experience as an Assistant Derrickman or equivalent drilling position.
  • Valid offshore safety certification such as BOSIET/FOET where applicable.
  • Valid medical fitness certificate for offshore work.
  • Well-control certification appropriate to the level of the position is an advantage.
  • Experience working on a drilling rig, particularly with tubular handling and mud systems, is required.

Skills Required
