Job Description

Marathon has immediate openings for Deckhands based out of an MPC Regional office. A Deckhand is a critical member to the operation of a towboat and the barges in its tow. Deckhands are generally scheduled on a 28 day on boat/28 day off boat rotation and work two six-hour shifts each day with six-hour rest periods in between shifts.

This is a full-time position working 6 rotations-28-days each, living on boat during your rotation. Meals and lodging are provided while living on the boat.

It is a physically demanding position requiring heavy lifting and exposure to all weather conditions; however, safety is the top priority.

Candidates outside the home port of Catlettsburg, KY are welcomed and encouraged to apply as generally, successful candidates would report to a MPC Regional office or directly to the towboat six times per year. 

 Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Maintaining cleanliness and operational readiness of the towboat and barges. 

  • Wiring barges and attaching barges to the boat securely for the purposes of transiting waterways. 

  • Ensuring safe passage of the boat and barges including completion of line handling and communication duties. 

  • Being a safety leader and good steward to the environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to complete Health Questionnaire and pass physical abilities test.

  • Successful completion of a background check and drug test

  • Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card

  • Requirements listed are not all inclusive.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Maritime industry experience – Pay rate is dependent on experience.

  • Maritime Industry Experience is strongly preferred, but not required.
