Position Summary:

The Deckhand supports the safe, efficient, and professional operation of the ferry by assisting the Captain – Ferry with vessel operations, passenger safety, monitoring activities, vessel maintenance, and customer service.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and adhere to all safety requirements on board and at docking.
  • Ensure passengers follow established safety procedures and regulations.
  • Conduct safety inspections of passengers and crew areas.
  • Assist in emergency situations, including evacuations, fire response, first aid and rescue operations.
  • Participate in emergency drills and maintain readiness for all emergency response procedures.
  • Inspect and maintain lifesaving, firefighting, and emergency equipment as assigned.
  • Assist the Ferry Captain with the safe operation of the vessel during boarding, departures, arrivals and docking procedures.
  • Perform mooring and unmooring operations, including handling lines and securing the vessel safely at docks.
  • Monitor vessel decks and passenger areas during voyages and ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Assist with loading and unloading passengers, cargo, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain awareness of weather and water conditions and communicate any concerns to the Ferry Captain.
  • Welcome passengers and provide professional, courteous and helpful service.
  • Assist passengers during boarding and disembarkation, including those requiring additional support.
  • Address passenger inquiries and escalate issues or concerns to the Ferry Captain when appropriate.
  • Provide information regarding schedules, safety procedures, and vessel operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Key Qualifications/Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work safely in a marine environment.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labour, handle mooring lines, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation and flexible availability, including weekends, holidays and shift work.
  • Previous experience in marine, ferry, transportation, tourism, or customer service operations considered an asset.
  • Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certification.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience handling lines, docking operations, and vessel maintenance.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting knowledge.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, self-dedicated, and results oriented.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and near water.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend and climb for extended periods and navigate vessel decks safely.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to respond effectively during emergency situations.

Compensation:

$17.60 to $22.60 per hour.  Pay rate is based on experience.
